Posted by Allan Ford 9 December, 2007 (0) Comment

It’s a proven fact. Everything that Judd Apatow touches turns to comedy gold. The 40 Year-Old Virgin filmmaker already brought you the two most hilarious flicks of 2007, Superbad and Knocked Up, and he’s not done yet. Apatow produced and co-wrote the forthcoming Columbia Pictures comedy Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. How hilarious is it? See for yourself with this exclusive look at the first 10 minutes of the movie — just click the link below.

Walk Hard, directed and co-written by Jake Kasdan (The TV Set, Orange County), stars John C. Reilly as larger-than-life musician and songwriter Dewey Cox. As the film’s official synopsis proclaims, America loves Cox! Nice. But behind the music is the up-and-down-and-up-again story of a musician whose songs would change a nation. On his rock ‘n roll spiral, Cox sleeps with 411 women, marries three times, has 22 kids and 14 stepkids, stars in his own ’70s TV show, collects friends ranging from Elvis to the Beatles to a chimp, and gets addicted to — and then kicks — every drug known to man… but despite it all, Cox grows into a national icon and eventually earns the love of a good woman — longtime backup singer Darlene (Jenna Fischer).

Paramount Pictures has sent over the official synopsis plus the first still for their upcoming drama Revolutionary Road starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

2008 Preview: Revolutionary Road
Based on the celebrated novel by Richard Yates, director Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road is the story of a young couple (Oscar(R) nominees Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet) trying to find fulfillment in an age of conformity. Trapped in a world of encoded convention, they dream without faith, as lies and self-deceptions build to explosive consequences.

Is it just me, or did Winslet lose weight?

Gerard Butler Might Still Escape From New York

Posted by Allan Ford 9 December, 2007 (0) Comment

Rumors of Gerard Butler’s (300) departure from the Escape From New York remake have been greatly exaggerated. Butler, who has been doing press for his new romcom P.S. I Love You, insists that he hasn’t dropped out of the project, but is taking a wait and see position. In October, New Line hired Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines helmer Jonathan Mostow in to rewrite, with an option to direct. The actor points out that no start date has been slated. If everything lines up again, Butler might indeed take on the character of Snake Plissken.

Originally Len Wiseman was attached to the project, and most recently, hack director Brett Ratner denied involvement in the project after weeks of fanboy protest over the rumored possibility.

Box Office: No Saturday Miracle Surge For The Golden Compass

Posted by Allan Ford 9 December, 2007 (0) Comment

10-golden-compas There was no Saturday miracle surge for New Line. The Golden Compass, an effects-laden family film starring Nicole Kidman with a reported budget of $200M, received a modest 16% increase from its opening day, posting an estimated $10.2M on Saturday. Assuming a Sunday drop of 33%, Compass will finish its opening weekend with a disastrous $25.84M. (For a comparison to other big budget, family-oriented films in this mold along with details about New Line’s dismal 2007 and Nicole Kidman’s box office cold streak, scroll down to my Friday Night report.)

Disney’s Enchanted blew past $80M domestic with a $4.9M Saturday, and the live action/animation hybrid with a sure-fire Oscar nomination for Amy Adams will cruise to an estimated $10.98M. This Christmas (Sony), Fred Claus (Warner Bros) and Beowulf (Dreamworks/Paramount) have finished 3-4-5 on Saturday and for the 3-day frame.

Juno (Fox Searchlight) enjoyed only a 2% increase from its meteoric Friday, grabbing a Saturday PTA of just over $18,000. The spectacularly-reviewed ensemble comedy will finish the weekend a PTA of just over $52,000, giving it one of the All-Time Top 50 opening weekend PTAs. This bodes very well for Searchlight’s upcoming expansion, and the commercial success can only help Oscar pushes for Ellen Page - Best Actress, Jennifer Garner - Best Supporting Actress, Diablo Cody - Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture.

Daniel Craig Dusts Up New Character in ‘Golden Compass’

Posted by Allan Ford 9 December, 2007 (0) Comment

10-daniel-craig He is already knee-deep in the Bond franchise, but that didn’t stop Daniel Craig from signing on for another potential series, The Golden Compass. In fact, the double commitment didn’t even cross his mind.

“I genuinely was such a fan of the books that when I heard that they were making it I thought, ‘I’d like to do this. I’d like to get involved,’” Craig explains. “I’m such a big Philip Pullman fan and his philosophies and his morals and the way he looks at the world. He writes children’s stories, but with major adult themes and sort of major ideas about being a good person and making the right choices.”

The story, based on Pullman’s His Dark Material trilogy, takes place in a world where each human has an animal spirit companion who acts as a manifestation of their soul. Twelve-year-old Lyra [Dakota Blue Richards] and her ever-changing animal friend Pantalaimon live as wards of Jordan College while Lyra’s uncle, Lord Asriel [Craig], travels to the Arctic and beyond searching for a controversial substance called Dust. Soon the precocious preteen finds herself on a journey all her own.

When Hollywood.com met up with Craig in London, he gushed about his talented young costar, what’s in store for everyone’s favorite secret agent, and playing the fame game…

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People Movie Trailer

Posted by Allan Ford 7 December, 2007 (0) Comment

Based on the bestselling memoir by Toby Young, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People follows a disillusioned British intellectual named Sidney Young (Simon Pegg) who both adores and despises the world of celebrity, fame and glamour. Young is offered a job at the diametrically opposed conservative New York City based Sharps magazine, and he soon becomes the talk of the town. Thus begins Sidney’s descent into success - his gradual move from derided outsider to confidante of starlet Sophie Maes (Megan Fox) - and a love affair with colleague Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst), that will either make him or break him.

At 48 seconds in length, the trailer is more of a teaser than anything else. I think I’ll need to see a full theatrical trailer before making any judgements. However, I plan on seeing any movie starring Simon Pegg. Plus his supporting cast is hot… I mean, also good.

The title of the book (and movie) is an obvious parody of Dale Carnegie’s bestseller, How to Win Friends and Influence People. Directed by Robert B. Weide (Curb Your Enthusiasm), the movie also stars Jeff Bridges and Gillian Anderson.
