‘Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer’ Movie Trailer & Poster

Posted by Allan Ford 26 January, 2008 (0) Comment

‘Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer’ movie stillJack Brooks: Monster Slayer is the name and it debuted at Slamdance, the even more-indie version of Sundance. Unfortunately I didn’t have time to catch a screening of it yet, but I’ve heard from numerous people that I trust that it kicks some serious ass. All you need to know before watching this trailer is the title - Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer. I have a good feeling this is going to be a huge cult hit, but I can’t say just yet. Either way, you need to watch this trailer, don’t even ask any more questions.

Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer was also the first purchase from Slamdance this year. Anchor Bay Entertainment has picked up the film for a mid-six figures deal. They’re also promising a theatrical commitment, meaning you’ll actually get to see this bad boy in theaters.

Ledger’s funeral arrangements a mystery

Posted by Allan Ford 26 January, 2008 (0) Comment

Heath LedgerDetails about funeral arrangements for actor Heath Ledger remained secret as his body was taken from a Manhattan funeral home.

Ledger’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, said Friday the arrangements “will continue to be kept private at the family’s request.”

Australian Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said his government would do whatever was needed to help the family bring back the 28-year-old Ledger’s body to Australia.

His body was moved from the police-barricaded funeral home amid a swarm of cameras and reporters at about 4 p.m. Friday. Meanwhile, police insisted they have no interest in interviewing actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who was the first person a masseuse called after finding an unresponsive Ledger in a Manhattan apartment Tuesday.

In her first comment since the Australian-born actor’s death, Olsen issued a statement that read: “Heath was a friend. His death is a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family during this very difficult time.”

Police said the masseuse who found Ledger’s body spent nine minutes making three calls to the “Full House” actress before dialing 911 for help, then called Olsen a fourth time after paramedics arrived. At some point during the flurry of calls, Olsen, who was in California, summoned her personal security guards to the apartment to help, police said.

Paris HiltonParis Hilton’s singing abilities have been praised by the choreographer of her new movie.

“I was surprised that she could sing,” choreographer Tre Armstrong told OK! magazine. “Honest to God, I will never crack on Paris. I haven’t. From what I hear from what they did, I like how she sounded.”

R&B singer Keyshia Cole, who stars alongside Hilton in the film, added: “I like the way she sings. I do.”

The rock musical movie will be released in the US in April.

All blood, no guts for ‘Rambo’

Posted by Allan Ford 25 January, 2008 (0) Comment

Silvester Stallone in ‘Rambo’ (2008)As he did with Rocky Balboa in 2006, Sylvester Stallone has resurrected his dejected Vietnam vet John Rambo for one final screen adventure. But where Rambo was once a macho symbol of 1980s excess, mowing down bad dudes in an over-the-top, comic book fashion, this Rambo — paunchy, sullen and prone to uttering fatalist statements like “(bleep) the world” — bares little resemblance to the sweat-drenched, shirtless superhero of yore. This Rambo — he introduces himself as “John” — is a hulking mass of once-toned muscle hiding beneath an oversize T-shirt, his face an aging, sorrowful slab of melting clay.

And once the violence starts — oh yes, there will be blood, as well as severed limbs, spilled guts and grisly decapitations — there’s no sheath of patriotism for the audience to hide behind. It’s brutal, unsettling and appalling.

“Rambo” opens in Thailand, with Rambo collecting cobras for an underground snake-fighting ring. (That can’t pay well.) He’s hired to guide a group of American missionaries to Burma, where they’ll bring aid to the citizens of the war-torn country. But when they’re captured by soldiers and held captive, it’s up to you-know-who to bring them back.

Stallone co-wrote and directed “Rambo,” and its early scenes pick up where 1982’s “First Blood” left off. Rambo is more of a character here than he was in “First Blood’s” bloated sequels, and the years of wear on his used tire of a mug speak volumes about Rambo’s life since we last left him 20 years ago.

Michael Moore is Mad as Hell About Documentaries…

Posted by Allan Ford 25 January, 2008 (0) Comment

Michael MooreMichael Moore is mad as hell about documentaries and foreign films being crowded out of theaters, and he’s not going to take it anymore.

“My new year’s resolution is to sit down with the heads of exhibition chains and have them devote one screen in their multiplexes to nonfiction and foreign films,” Moore said. He said he’s spoken with fellow docu directors to join him in the initiative, including board members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ documentary branch, though it is unclear if AMPAS would be officially involved.

The director of four of the 12 top-grossing docus of all time — “Fahrenheit 9/11,” “Roger & Me,” the Oscar-winning “Bowling for Columbine” and the just-announced Oscar nominee “Sicko” — wants to use his influence with exhibitors to make this happen. “If not me, then who?” he said. “I’m the one who got through the door.”

Moore’s motivation is the declining box-office performance of indie films last year, in which many were taken out of theaters before they had a chance to grow word-of-mouth business. He said it’s an extension of his work promoting fellow indie filmmakers at his annual Traverse City Film Festival.

“People want to see documentaries, but there’s a disconnect between that desire and the exhibitors out there,” added Moore, who has been planning the initiative for several months. “We’re not asking for charity,” he said.
