Reitman Enraged - Genie Awards ignores ‘Juno’

Posted by Fiona 29 February, 2008 (0) Comment

ellenpage1.jpgThough has been nominated and won many prestigious awards, the drama comedy “Juno” was left out at the 28th Annual Genie Awards’ nominations. The ineligible reportedly made the film’s director Jason Reitman to be extremely upset towards the people behind the awards claimed to be the Canadian Oscar.

According to press release, the director was reportedly enraged with the reason given for the ruling out of his film. Reportedly, though the Ellen Page-starring film features Canadian theps, it wasn’t considered for the nods because it wasn’t financed by Canadian dollars.

Agitated Reitman said:

“How are we not eligible for a Genie when David Cronenberg’s film about Russians living in London, shot in England with a British crew and British cast, is eligible? I’m sorry, but somebody is going to have to explain that to me; I don’t get it.”

So far, the Fox Searchlight Pictures’ film has been awarded with best picture prizes at the 2nd Rome Film Festival and the 23rd Independent Spirit Awards. It was also given Chairman’s Vanguard Award at the 19th annual Palm Springs Film Festival. The film has also brought many recognition to its scribbler Diablo Cody, including 2008 Oscar and 2008 WGA Awards for Best Original Screenplay.

Will Ferrell And John C. Reilly In ‘Step Brothers’

Posted by Allan Ford 29 February, 2008 (0) Comment

‘Step Brothers’

It’s still no Anchorman or Old School, but this next Will Ferrell project “Step Brothers” looks like it might be at least better than “Semi-Pro”. For one thing, it’s directed and co-written by Adam McKay who wrote Anchorman and who, of course, collaborated with his daughter Pearl to make the viral video “The Landlord.” For another thing, it seems like it will be based on these two big kids, Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (Reilly), and their competitive/loving relationship, as opposed to something a little more gimmicky, like race-car driving or the 1970s in general.

In other news, this is the movie for which Will Ferrell auctioned off a role to support his friend’s charity, Cancer for College. The role ultimately went to a 10-year-old boy from Dallas for just over $47,000.

Step Brothers opens July 25. The trailer made me laugh out loud in a few spots, so to check it out and tell me what you think, read more.

Brand New ‘Iron Man’ Trailer Lands!

Posted by Allan Ford 29 February, 2008 (0) Comment

‘Iron Man’

We’re only three months away from having Harrison Ford’s face stamped on every bus phone box and bum cheek (I recently lost a bet), but whilst we sit in wait for the return of Dr. Jones we’re also rather keen on the arrival of Robert Downey Jr. in an iron armour.

Another brand new trailer has turned up for ‘Iron Man‘ and if you thought the previous ones were good, check out this beast. Cutting to the chase and only giving a glance to the hefty bruiser that is the Mark I suit, Tony Stark’s machine loving mind gets straight back to work when returning from his kidnapping in Iraq and onto a sleeker smoother suit which eventually receives a little ‘hot rod red’.

But as Stark is flying around and giving US fighter jets the slip, an enemy is rising within his own business, one who will eventually strike at the billionaire hero with his own weapon.

Downey Jr. could have easily found the role he was born to play and Gwyneth Paltrow looks surprisingly alright as a ginger (pronounced ‘ging-gah’), but we’ll leave the opinions up to you. Have a gander and see what you think…

New Line Cinema Becomes Part of Warner Bros

Posted by Fiona 28 February, 2008 (0) Comment

newlinecinema.jpgNew Line Cinema, who took a massive hit late last year with The Golden Compass, and haven’t had much luck at the box office throughout the past year will now become part of Warner Bros.

In making the announcement, Time Warner’s President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bewkes said:

“We are moving quickly to improve our business performance and financial returns. New Line has built a strong franchise of cutting-edge entertainment. We can enhance its value by combining it with Warner Bros. Given the trend toward fewer movie releases, New Line and Warner Bros. will now have more complementary release slates, with New Line focusing on genres that have been its strength.

With the growing importance of international revenues, it makes sense for New Line to retain its international film rights and to exploit them through Warner Bros.’ global distribution infrastructure. We can also take better advantage of digital distribution platforms by combining our studios.  These changes will enhance our revenue opportunities and drive dramatic cost efficiencies and higher margins at New Line.”

New Line will now do so as part of Warner Bros. and will probably be a much smaller operation than in the past. Time Warner hopes that operating New Line as a unit of Warner Bros. will allow New Line to focus on the creative side of movie-making, while reducing costs and taking advantage of Warner Bros.’ distribution systems.

Four New ‘Taken’ Clips Leave Us Fearing Liam Neeson!?

Posted by Allan Ford 28 February, 2008 (0) Comment

‘Taken’After having a small bit of liquid residue slowly appearing at the corner of our mouths after seeing the sublime trailer for Luc Besson’s ‘Taken’ a while back, we’ve had our eye on this little number, now WorstPreviews have turned up with a few glimpses from the film and our hopes for this have only heightened - we want to see Neeson give slave traders a battering! After loosening the protective grip around his daughter to allow her to go to Paris and live the dream (and get the ex missus of his back), his darkest fears are realised when the poor young girl is kidnapped by unknown attackers and slipped into the underground slave trade, but as is soon revealed, this nasty mob picked the wrong girl to kidnap - father dearest turns out to be a retired spy and part time badass.

The bad guys don’t stand a chance - and I pity them for it. I’m talking ‘Mr T style’ pity.

Whilst the clips do start off with the mild stuff (eg. Dad giving the green for daughter to do what she wants and the kidnapping going ahead), the rest - well - the rest is just poetry.

I tell thee what, Liam Neeson can be a scary fella when he wants to and clips 1-4 prove it. Read the rest of this entry
