Cannes 2012: THE TASTE OF MONEY by Im Sang-soo

The Taste of Money

The Taste of Money is a great title. C’mon, admit it! You immediately know that it’s some kind of mix between desire, love, hate and sex… Of course, let’s not forget some strange murder! There you go – a simplified version of the plot for the Im Sang-soo‘s movie which will compete for the Palme D’ Or at this years Cannes Film Festival! Now, let’s get serious. Im Sang-soo’s seventh film is something that he describes as an extension of his previous 2010 movie The Housemaid (premiered at Cannes 2010 In Competition). And as I mentioned above, we’re actually dealing with an erotic suspense drama in here, which follows a conglomerate-owning family living in Korean high society. Here’s the synopsis part: “Joo Young-jak is the private male secretary of Baek Geum-ok, middle-aged heiress and wife of a rich chaebol. Baek covets Young-jak’s young body, and he has already sold his pride for money a long time ago. What tangles up their relationship is the appearance of Baek’s daughter Na-mi. Na-mi shows an interest in Young-jak, and he is also attracted to this girl who is so different from her money-is-everything parents. Young-jak strives to survive in a world where money, sex and power dominates people’s lives and ideology.” The Taste of Money stars Kim Gang-woo, Baek Yoon-sik, Youn Yuh-jung, Kim Hyo-jin, On Ju-wan and Maui Taylor. The film will be released this October in France, and is also looking for a U.S. distributor. In a meanwhile, we will have a chance to watch it in Cannes. Good luck to Im Sang-soo and his team!
