Cannes Film Festival’s 48th Critics’ Week Lineup
First-time filmmakers will be center stage at this year’s 48th annual International Critics Week, where announced competition titles will be up for the Camera d’Or. Critics Week runs May 14-22, 2009. in Cannes.
Fest opener will be Mathias Gokalp’s freshman drama “Rien de personnel” (Nothing Personal), featuring French stars Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Denis Podalydes, Zabou Breitman, Pascal Greggory, Melanie Doutey and Bouli Lanners.
Latin American films continue a strong showing, with Chilean helmer Alejandro Fernandez Almendras‘ “Huacho” and Uruguayan director Alvaro Brechner‘s “Bad Day to Go Fishing” both included in the sidebar’s seven-film competition.
Colombian feature “1989,” directed by Camilo Matiz and starring Vincent Gallo will be presented on closing night.
Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight And Short Films Lineup
Lineup for Cannes’ 41st edition of Directors’ Fortnight has been fully announced Friday in Paris.
Francis Ford Coppola turned down Cannes’ non-competing slot, but his latest “Tetro” will open the program. “After Coppola announced that he wouldn’t show “Tetro” out of competition, we asked to screen it for the Quinzaine. We loved it! And our enthusiasm convinced Coppola that an opening Fortnight slot would be the ideal place to debut his film,” Fortnight topper Olivier Pere said.
Cannes 2009 Lineup
The official lineup for the 62nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will run from May 13 to 24, 2009, has been unveiled and it promises to be one of the best line-ups in years, on paper, at least.
We’ve got four Palme D’or winners – Quentin Tarentino, Ken Loach, Jane Campion, Lars von Trier and a number of returning vets – Pedro Almodovar, Alain Resnais, Marco Bellocchio and Tsai Ming-liang.
Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week will be fully announced Friday in Paris.
Cannes Film Festival 2009 Official Selection On April 23
The official selection for the 62nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will run from May 13 to 24, 2009, will be unveiled on April 23, 2009 at the traditional press conference. Fest director Thierry Fremaux and his selection committee still have numerous films to watch. Fremaux prefers to keep his options open to a certain extent until he’s seen everything, leaving anxious filmmakers, distribs and sales companies in the dark until the final bell. If you saw Barry Levinson‘s “What Just Happened” you know how they feel now.
The news are coming and by now we know that the fest will have movies from top international filmmakers as directors including Ang Lee, Jane Campion, Michael Haneke, Quentin Tarantino, Ken Loach, Pedro Almodovar, Bong Joon-ho, Marco Bellocchio, Lars von Trier and Johnnie To among others.
At the moment it’s been confirmed that Disney Pixar’s “Up” directed by Pete Docter will open Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday May 13th, 2009 and we know French actress Isabelle Huppert will head the jury at this year’s Festival de Cannes.
Cannes Film Festival 2009 To Celebrate Fellini’s “La dolce vita”
This year’s Cannes Film Festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Golden Palm (Palm d’Or) Winner Federico Fellini‘s “La dolce vita” with the world premiere of a documentary about the making of this classic movie.
Titled “We Who Made “La dolce vita” (“Noi che abbiamo fatto ‘La dolce vita‘) the tribute is directed by Gianfranco Mingozzi who was Fellini’s a.d. on the film “La dolce vita.”

The documentary unspools interviews with Anita Ekberg (Sylvia) who bathed in the Trevi Fountain in the movie, Yvonne Furneaux (Emma), who plays protag Marcello Mastroianni‘s (Marcello Rubini) suicidal girlfriend and with Anouk Aimée (Maddalena), who plays his lover.
It also features commentary from Rome paparazzi of that time from whom Fellini drew inspiration.
“The film was a great adventure for everyone, and the documentary captures that spirit,” said Fellini Foundation topper Vittorio Boarini.
Federico Fellini directed “La dolce vita” and worked on the script with Ennio Flaiano. “The Sweet Life,” shot in 1959 and premiered in Cannes in 1960 won Golden Palm 50 years ago.

Inglourious Basterds’ Premiere At Cannes Film Festival 2009

During the last year’s Cannes Film Festival, Quentin Tarantino promised to return this year at Cannes with his new film.
”The next movie I’m doing is my World War II movie. I just finished up the first draft and if all goes well, I will be here, in Cannes, in 2009 with “Inglorious Bastards”, Tarantino said then.
Cannes Film Festival 2009 – Animated Up Opens Festival

“Up,” directed by Pete Docter, who also directed the animated hit “Monsters, Inc.” and developed the story and characters for “Toy Story,” will be shown at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival opening ceremony on May 13, 2009.
The first time an animated film has opened the world’s biggest cinema competition, organizers said on Thursday.
Several animated films, from the Israeli drama “Waltz with Bashir,” shown at last year’s competition to “Shrek” in 2001 or the 1947 classic “Dumbo” have featured in the official selection but so far none has ever opened the festival.
