‘Pulp Fiction’ screenwriter Roger Avary arrested
Oscar-winning screenwriter Roger Avary was arrested Sunday on suspicion of manslaughter and driving under the influence after a Ventura County car crash that killed a man and injured Avary’s wife, authorities said.
Avary, 42, was the driver in the single-car collision shortly after midnight in Ojai, said Captain Ross Bonfiglio of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department.
Killed in the accident was Andreas Zini, 34, a resident of Italy who was apparently visiting the couple. Firefighters cut Zini from the car with Jaws of Life and he died several hours later at Ventura County Medical Center.
Avary’s wife Gretchen, 40, was ejected from the car and found in the road by deputies, Bonfiglio said. She was hospitalized in stable condition.
Avary was booked but later released on $50,000 bail, Bonfiglio said. He did not know whether Avary has hired an attorney.
Avary won an Academy Award along with Quentin Tarantino for writing “Pulp Fiction,” and was also a co-writer of the recent epic “Beowulf.” He and his wife live in Ojai, a popular artists’ colony and tourist destination 14 miles north of Ventura.

WGA Strike Bumping Films’ Scheduled Release
Sony will push back production of ‘Angels & Demons’ due to the strike, bumping the film’s scheduled release from 2008 to early summer 2009.
Sony spokesman Steve Elzer said that while the filmmakers and the studio felt that the screenplay turned in by Akiva Goldsman was ‘very strong, we do not believe it is the fully-realized production draft required of this ambitious project’.
There is no new start date for the movie, which was supposed to go into production in February, but the studio has now scheduled May 15th , 2009 for its release. Elzer added that Sony doesn’t expect any of its other 2008 films, including ‘Bond 22’, ‘Step Brothers’, ‘Hancock’ and ‘Don’t Mess with the Zohan’, to be affected.
Elijah Wood Hopes For The Return Of Frodo
MTV Movies Blog recently spoke with Elijah Wood about the upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit.
Wood stated about his conversation with Peter Jackson, “I haven’t spoken to him directly about it [but] I’ve e-mailed him, and as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be The Hobbit and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.”
Wood is excited at the possibility of coming back, “If I’m asked to go back and revisit that character and it makes sense, I would love to. I would absolutely love to. Nothing was really written with Frodo involved in it. That was sort of an ancillary tale outside of Lord of the Rings. I can’t imagine that they [Jackson, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens] would write great reams of information regarding my character. But if he [Frodo] should show up, it would actually be the perfect way to revisit because it could be small enough that I could go back and have a nice sort of reunion with the memories that I have of the experience.”
Wood is more excited about the film as a fan than a potential cast member, “It’s a great triumph [that Peter is involved.] I think that’s really important that the same team that worked on the [earlier] films [work on "The Hobbit"], the same effects team, that it be shot in New Zealand. I think that it’s important that Ian McKellen is cast as Gandalf, just so that there’s a synergy between the films. I think people want it to exist in the same world. So at least now we are assured that it will be done through that same lens, which is great. It’s exciting.”
The Hobbit will open in 2010.
