We’ve seen set photos (above), and we’ve seen promo pics for magazine spreads (below), but here’s the first official look at Matt Damon and Michael Douglas in Behind the Candelabra.
The HBO biopic about Liberace comes from director Steven Soderbergh and also stars Rob Lowe, Dan Aykroyd and Cheyenne Jackson. Damon, as the feather-haired, leisure-suited-up lover of Wladziu Valentino Liberace, widely known simply as Liberace, looks gorgeous. Scott Thornson (Damon) and Liberace (Douglas) pose in fancy suits while standing next to a vintage Corvette coupe.
The story will depict the turbulent relationship between the most flamboyant, popular easy listening pianist of the ’60s and ’70s, Liberace and Thorson, who later filed a palimony suit against him.
Damon said at TCA in January,
We weren’t giggling about it. These were people’s lives. We wanted to get it right.
The movie that will premiere in May on HBO is based on Thorson’s 1988 memoir ‘Behind the Candelabra: My Life With Liberace” with the script provided by Richard LaGravanese.
Check out the official image from Behind the Candelabra, the film rejected by Hollywood studios for being ‘too gay’.
