Box Office: No Strings Attached Estimated Weekend $20M
Ivan Reitman-directed romantic comedy No Strings Attached, opened solidly to $7.3 million Friday, according to studio estimates, putting the R-rated Ashton Kutcher/Natalie Portman film on pace to match pre-release tracking forecasts of around $20 million. Budgeted at $25 million, “No Strings” debuted in 3,018 theaters with semisoft reviews (49 percent on Rotten Tomatoes), but great tracking among women under 25, with 57 percent of that demographic convey explicit interest in seeing the movie, according to one tracking firm.
The first thing you should know about “No Strings Attached” is that it’s not a true romantic comedy but a sex comedy with romantic ambitions; the second is that it’s brighter and cuter than many of its recent fellows. On opening night, the movie played to theaters across the country packed full of young women (and a lot of guys who want to make out).
Sony’s The Green Hornet finished in second place Friday with $7.3 million. The $130 million Seth Rogen 3D action movie should cross the $60 million mark domestically by the end of the weekend, while experiencing a week-to-week drop of under 50 percent, if projections delay.
Universal buddy comedy The Dilemma is in third place with an estimated $3 million on Friday. The Ron Howard-directed movie, which stars Vince Vaughn and Kevin James, is expected to bring in over $9 million this weekend and also drop less than 50 percent from its premiere week.
Anthony Hopkins in Talks to Play Alfred Hitchcock
Few days ago we had a little chat about the upcoming Sacha Gervasi‘s adaptation of Stephen Rebello‘s non-fiction book titled Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho.
Today we’re here to share something awesome with you! Anthony Hopkins is currently in talks to portray Mr. Hitchcock (who else?).
As we previously mentioned, this is not Hopkins’ first time when it comes to the role, since the actor was attached to a previous attempt of making the project with Ryan Murphy directing and Helen Mirren starring opposite Hopkins.
Check out the Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho book synopsis:
“A gripping behind-the-scenes look inside the classic suspense shocker and the creative genius who revolutionized film-making. First released in June 1960, Psycho altered the landscape of horror films forever.
Will Oscar Winner The Secret in Their Eyes/El secreto de sus ojos Win BAFTA and Cesar Awards?
Today we’re here to have a little chat (actually a reminder) about the movie that definitely deserves our attention, especially after winning the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film at the 82nd Academy Awards, making Argentina the first country in Latin America to win it twice!
So, you already guess the title: The Secret In Their Eyes or, if you prefer El Secreto de sus Ojos directed by Juan José Campanella, premiered at Toronto Film Festival (September 2009).
But, when it comes to this project, this is not the end of the award-list. It also won the award for best Hispanic-American Film of the Year from the Spanish Film Academy, beating out rival film, Peru’s, The Milk of Sorrow.
Beside that, this crime drama has been nominated as Best Film Not in the English Language for the Orange British Academy Film Awards – BAFTA (February 13, 2011), as well as for the Cesar Awards (February 25, 2011) in the same category.
Marvel Hires Writer Mark Bailey For Black Panther Movie
Well, guess what, folks from Marvel Studio are now more than serious about that Black Panther project.
At least, that’s what we had a chance to read from the latest reports that go like this – the studio has finally hired a documentary writer Mark Bailey to pen the adaptation.
Surprised with this news? Who cares, as long as T’Challa is back!
Let us remind you that Wesley Snipes was attached to an adaptation back in 2006, but the movie never happened.
Then, director John Singleton was brought in to helm Black Panther in 2007 with Chiwetel Ejiofor for the role.
G.I. Joe: the Rise of Cobra’s Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje has discussed negotiating for the role in both 2009 and 2010, with no luck.
Now, we have Bailey on board, man with quite impressive background in documentaries (although an unusual choice for this adaptation), such as the 2003 HBO documentary Pandemic: Facing AIDS and A Boy’s Life.
New Official Trailer for Rubber – Movie About A Killer Tire With Psychic Powers
I’m quite sure you all remember this title, just like I believe this is the weirdiest thing you’ve ever heard of lately.
So, we’re here today to talk about the movie that was part of last year’s special screening in the International Critic’s Week competition at the Cannes Film Festival, titled Rubber, and directed by Quentin Dupieux a.k.a Mr. Oizo.
Rubber will be released on April 1, and you can watch it on demand starting February 25.
Magnet has released the real deal: full length trailer to a bizarre and naughty tire Robert.
And yes, I’ve already seen all those negative reports about this psycho-tire, and I really don’t get it!
What do you have against this little creature? So what if he (it) goes around killing people? He’s been abandoned in the desert for God’s sake! And, no, I wasn’t Robert’s fan at the beginning, but now… I even think he’s (it’s) cute!
Alex Gibney to Make WikiLeaks Documentary
Jullian Assange? WikiLeaks? Alex Gibney? Does that sound familiar? Does that make some sense?
Definitely yes, especially now, after Universal Pictures has acquired the documentary about WikiLeaks founder Assange that Oscar-winner director Alex Gibney will direct and produce.
But don’t get confused with this one, because this project has nothing to do with previously announced biopic about Assange…
So, Assange is quite impressive guy, indeed. At least because you can either love him, or hate him, there’s just no indifference (ok, I already see someone writing that “i” word, and that’s not nice!).
He’s the founder of the whistleblower organization WikiLeaks and responsible for the release of thousands of confidential government documents, thus causing an uproar in both the political world and the media world.
Yorick van Wageningen Joins The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo update!
Dutch actor Yorick van Wageningen has joined David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s novel that we already wrote about.
By now, we all know that the movie has quite impressive cast: Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Stellen Skarsgard, Robin Wright Penn, Max von Sydow, Christopher Plummer and Joely Richardson.
Now, Yorick van Wagingen, best known for his role in The Chronicles of Riddick, has been cast in the small but seminal role of “Nils Bjurman, the court appointed guardian over Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara) when Holger Palmgren suffers a heart attack.”
According to the latest reports, Holger Palmgern will be played by Swedish actor Bengt C.W. Carlsson, who you probably remember from the title Songs from the Second Floor.
Kiefer Sutherland Confirms 24 Movie
As said by Kiefer Sutherland, the long-discussed film adaptation of 24, the Emmy Award-winning series that ended its run last year, should begin shooting in “about eight months.”
The film was originally planned to have been shot in between show’s sixth and seventh seasons (the show ran eight seasons). 24-hour timeframe will be filmed in two hours long. Sutherland said
It’s a very difficult thing to take something you’ve done for eight years, almost two hundred episodes, and try to find a story that’s going to be unique and yet service the history of the show as well.”
20th Century Fox Television has axed Billy Ray’s (State of Play) 24 film script. Howard Gordon, the longtime executive producer of 24 who is also anticipated to produce the big screen version, told EW exclusively.
There is talk about re-approaching it. I understand (director/producer) Tony Scott is meeting with Kiefer to talk about ideas. People are still talking about it.”
