Production Officially Starts on Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit; Plus Two New Images and the Official Plot
Production has started in Wellington, New Zealand, on The Hobbit, director Peter Jackson’s two $500 million film version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s widely read masterpiece.
The Hobbit is set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, which Jackson and his team developed for the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that closed with the Oscar-winning The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
Both films, with screenplays by Fran Walsh, Guillermo del Toro, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson, will be shot in digital 3D using the Epic camera and latest stereo technology. Filming will go on at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
Hugh Jackman Turned Down Oscar Hosting Again
Hugh Jackman had to turned down an offer to host this year’s Academy Awards for a second time due to scheduling conflicts.
The Australian actor hosted the Oscars in 2009 but he turned down a similar offer last year, because the actor said he didn’t want to host two years in a row, leaving the job to Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin.
So, now we know that his movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 is scheduled to begin filming in late February in both New York and Tokyo, Japan, right around the time of the Oscars, so Academy bosses have been left disappointed again after seeking out Jackman’s talents for the 2011 show.
And now Jackman’s out. So who should take his place?
Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet, Sean Penn Present Oscars 2010
Penelope Cruz, Kate Winslet and Sean Penn will all present Oscars at this year’s ceremony.
Traditionally, the acting winners from the previous year return to hand out trophies of their own.
They will be among the many presenters at this year’s 82nd annual Academy Awards.
The trio – Cruz, Winslet, Penn – were chosen because they won awards in the acting categories last year.
James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow in Race for Oscars and Green Globes
James Cameron has been cleaning up at the movie award ceremonies this year winning Best Director and Best Motion Picture at the Golden Globe Awards and receiving a stellar nine Oscar nominations for the March Academy Awards. He has also received seven nominations for the Green Globe Film Awards with Best Picture, Best Action Film, Best Science Fiction Film, Best Director, Best Music/Song in a Film, 10 Best Pictures of the Decade, and 10 Best Filmmakers of the Decade.
The highly celebrated Canadian film director, producer, screenwriter, editor and inventor has been competing with his former wife Kathryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker) who took the Best Director Award at the 2010 Directors Guild of America Awards and Producers Guild Awards. Bigelow tied Cameron with nine Oscar nominations this year, and the Green Globes may give Cameron the upper hand in the award race as Bigelow only received one Green Globe nomination for Best Picture, as opposed to Cameron’s seven.

Oscars Bosses Change The Rules
Bosses at the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have changed the voting rules for the Academy Awards – to help make the polling for the coveted Best Picture Oscar more accurate.
The changes mean members will now be asked to rate the ten nominees in order of preference, rather than picking one outright winner.
