INTERNATIONAL 3D SOCIETY STUDY

The International 3D Society released a 3D revenue study today showing that 3D movie fans are driving opening weekend box office revenues by significant margins.

The report shows opening weekend 3D ticket revenues outpacing 2D ticket sales by margins of 2 to 1. The report states that Alice in Wonderland generated over $81 million dollars or 70% of its opening weekend gross revenues on 3D screens vs. $34 million in 2D domestic ticket revenue.

Society President Jim Chabin said,

“While this study is just a snap shot of what opening weekend’s 3D grosses look like, these kinds of trends do reflect that consumers are obviously thrilled by 3D.”

The 3D to 2D domestic box office comparison was prepared for the Society by Exhibitor Relations, Inc. Moviegoers are purchasing 3D movie tickets by an almost 2 to 1 margin over 2D tickets.

Alice in Wonderland

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton reteam once again – this time it’s for an adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland.

Mia Wasikowska is 19 year old Alice, a girl who’s facing the possibility of being married off to a man she doesn’t love and on the verge of enduring a life she really doesn’t want.

As she runs off to consider the proposal, she falls down a rabbit hole and finds herself in Wonderland.

Movie Theater

At first, it was a very nice Lewis Carrol‘s adventure story that we all grew up with. Than, director  Tim Burton decided to make kind of magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time.

So, we got the chance to watch young lady Alice, while she returns to this fairy-tale world, trying to find her true destiny and, by the way, with her childhood friends, end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. Who would miss these adventures of Alice, knowing that the role of Mad Hatter belongs to Johnny Depp?!

So, everything started pretty well. The Walt Disney company had a lot of reasons to be satisfied, but in the same time, theatres were hoping for exactly the same thing, since we all know that normally, movies play in first-run theaters for up to 16 weeks.
