Summit Entertainment have released two new images from their upcoming CG animated film “Astro Boy.”

Astro Boy is set in futuristic Metro City and follows a young robot built with incredible powers by a brilliant scientist trying to replace the son that he has lost. The young robot (Astro Boy) is unable to fulfill the grieving man’s expectations and so embarks on a journey to learn about himeslf, the world, and ultimately must battle to save Metro City.

Animated film is directed by David Bowers, written by Timothy Harris, starring Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucas & Donald Sutherland.

Here’s a featurette and international poster for the upcoming “Astro Boy” animated movie.

Set in futuristic Metro City, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers. Powered by pure positive “blue” energy, Astro Boy (Freddie Highmore) is endowed with super strength, x-ray vision, unbelievable speed and the ability to fly-not to mention the purest spirit on the planet. Embarking on a journey across the planet to discover his powers, Astro Boy encounters a netherworld of robot gladiators and other comic characters, and learns the joys and emotions of being human. When he learns his friends and family are in danger, Astro Boy marshals all his awesome super powers and returns to Metro City, in a valiant effort to save everything he cares about and to embrace his place in the world.

The featurette first presents the Astro Boy character as The Icon comparing it to Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse while giving background facts of the character which has been inducted into The Robot Hall of Fame.

Halfway through the video, the in-development movie is introduced by showing the filming process of the CGI animation. The footage then continues by displaying the characters side-by-side with the actors hired to voice them. Nearing the end of the featurette, Nicolas Cage who is set to lend his voice to Dr. Tenma shares a few words about the movie.

New Astro Boy Poster and Teaser Trailer

MTV Splash Page has debuted a new poster and Summit Entertainment has debuted second teaser trailer for the upcoming CG-animated film “Astro Boy,” which is set for release on October 28.

Astro Boy follows the adventures of a young-yet-powerful robot who, in the hopes of winning his inventor-father’s heart, sets off on a quest to rid the world of evil. However, he soon discovers that his home, Metro City, stands on the brink of destruction, and it is up to him to save the day as well as his friends and family.

The film features voice acting by Freddie Highmore, Nicolas Cage, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy, Matt Lucus and Donald Sutherland.

British Actor Matt Lucas Joins Astro Boy

Imagi Studios (creator of TMNT), today announced that multiple BAFTA Awards winner Matt Lucas (for the popular BBC comedy series “Little Britain”) has joined the cast of its CG-animated motion picture “Astro Boy.” Lucas joins Nicolas Cage, Donald Sutherland, Kristen Bell, Nathan Lane, Bill Nighy and Eugene Levy with Freddie Highmore in the title role.

David Bowers (Flushed Away) is directing Astro Boy from a screenplay written by Timothy Harris (Trading Places, Kindergarten Cop), with Maryann Garger producing.

The iconic character Astro Boy has found global popularity since his creation in the early 1950s by Japan’s Osamu Tezuka, known as the “god of manga” and “father of anime,” and has been the hero of three acclaimed animated television series aired around the world.

The movie is slated for domestic release on October 23, 2009.

Astro Boy Release Date Announced: October 23, 2009

Summit Entertainment will release “Astro Boy” in North America on Friday, October 23, 2009, it was announced by Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment, and Erin Corbett, President of Imagi Studios U.S.

Summit and Imagi are putting together the final details on a marketing plan designed to reach both the family movie-going audience and adult fans of Astro Boy alike. Plan includes a commitment from a major fast food restaurant partner as well as alliances in the areas of toys, games, books and others, soon to be announced.

The film will hit theaters the same day as Mira Nair’s Amelia Earhart biopic Amelia and the Phillip Noyce-directed adaptation of Dirt Music.

Kristen Bell (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Heroes, Veronica Mars) will lend her voice to the animated movie “Astro Boy“, according to Variety.

Bell joins Nicolas Cage, Scarlett Johansson, Donald Sutherland, Bill Nighy, Nathan Lane, Eugene Levy and Freddie Highmore.

To be directed by David Bowers using a script from Timothy Harris, Astro Boy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father’s expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.

The film is currently scheduled to be released next year.
