Bill Condon Confirmed as Breaking Dawn Director!

Breaking Dawn director, Bill Condon

Bill Condon has been hired to direct The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Summit Entertainment has announced.

In a press release dated Wednesday, April 28, the studio confirmed reports that Condon is tapped to serve behind the lens for the final Twilight film.

Condon’s credits include writing and directing Dreamgirls, Kinsey and Gods and Monsters. He also wrote the screenplay for Chicago.

According to Variety, Summit has not yet announced if Breaking Dawn will be broken into two films although it’s widely expected to do so.

Bill Condon to Direct Breaking Dawn?

Breaking DownWe reported last month that Summit Entertainment had been looking at top notch directors to bring the final novel, Breaking Dawn, to the screen across a likely two movies. Names floated around include Gus Van Sant, Sofia Coppola and Bill Condon and now Deadline New York reports that Oscar-winning filmmaker Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kinsey, Gods and Monsters) has emerged as the number one choice to direct the two-part feature The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

According to the site Summit Entertainment hasn’t signed him, but negotiations are underway after several strong meetings. Both films will begin production this fall, and the studio is planning on shooting them back to back.

In terms of how the movies will be split, sources tell EW.com that the wedding, honeymoon, Bella’s pregnancy, and the birth will all be covered in the first movie. Part two will focus on Bella’s transformation into a vampire and Jacob’s relationship with Renesmee Cullen.

Kristen Stewart (Bella) has spoken up about the latest news regarding the candidates for Breaking Dawn director, confirming that the studio has really tried to get one of the said helmers.

“Breaking Dawn” Release Details

Breaking Dawn, the final chapter in the Twilight Saga franchise, will apparently be shot as two films back-to-back starting in mid-October according to reports.

The sources additionally informed that Summit Entertainment is currently looking for “high-end” directors while the film will be split into two parts.

ComingSoon.net contacted Summit for confirmation, but the studio says that a decision hasn’t been made:

“No decision has been made and as we have said all along we are continuing to work with Stephenie Meyer to bring ‘Breaking Dawn’ to the big screen.”

Breaking Dawn is the least popular book in the series – author Stephenie Meyer calls it the “Rob effect”, reasoning that fans can’t accept that the series had to come to an end, just as they couldn’t at first accept Pattinson in the role of Edward.

New Moon” has made so far $481 million worldwide.

The third installment, “Eclipse,” nearly done is set to hit theaters next summer, on June 30th, 2010.

There’s no release date been set for “Breaking Dawn” as of yet but there’s a rumor that studio Summit Entertainment is considering splitting the fourth and last installment of the franchise into two movies.

This means reopening negotiations and securing approval from the author, Stephanie Meyer. It also means making new deals with a principal cast, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, that is only locked up for four films.

The fourth saga in the Twilight Series, “Breaking Dawn” is going back to it’s roots and will be filmed in Portland, Oregon. David Slade is directing “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse“, but it is unknown if he will also direct any of the Breaking Dawn films. In addition, a new production company, Sunswept Entertainment, has been brought on board for “Breaking Dawn.” Karen Rosenfelt, daughter of former MGM Chairman & CEO Frank Edward Rosenfelt, served as Producer on both “Twilight” and on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse“. She did not work on “New Moon“, but is producing “Breaking Dawn” through her Sunswept Entertainment banner.

Robert Pattinson (who is currently in Cannes) has confirmed that there will be a fourth film in the vampire series. He said the movie would be based on Stephenie Meyer‘s best-selling novel, “Breaking Dawn.”

He was currently in the final days of shooting the second film, “New Moon,” in Italy and would start third movie, “Eclipse,” in October. Pattinson said his role in “New Moon” had been beefed up compared to the book, in which Edward is simply “a voice in Bella’s head”.
