Directors and Producers Write Open Letter Protesting Premium VOD
From time to time directors and producers from all over the world sit down and write an open letter. When was the last time that actually happened? I have no idea, but I do know that right now there’s an open letter all over the internet that comes straight from 23 leading directors and producers, and that list includes James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow, Michael Bay, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, Michael Mann, Gore Verbinski and for the full list check out the rest of this report.
First of all let me tell you that all of them have signed an open letter opposing a pricy new premium VOD service that puts movies from Warner Bros., Sony, Universal and 20th Century Fox in homes only 60 days after a film’s theatrical release.
Here’s what they all had to say in a letter:
“We are the artists and business professionals who help make the movie business great. We produce and direct movies. We work on the business deals that help get movies made. At the end of the day, we are also simply big movie fans.
Lately, there’s been a lot of talk by leaders at some major studios and cable companies about early-to-the-home “premium video-on-demand.” In this proposed distribution model, new movies can be shown in homes while these same films are still in their theatrical run. In this scenario, those who own televisions with an HDMI input would be able to order a film through their cable system or an Internet provider as a digital rental. Terms and timing have yet to be made concrete, but there has been talk of windows of 60 days after theatrical release at a price of $30.
Julia Roberts to Play Evil Queen in Snow White
Relativity Media has closed a deal with Oscar-winner Julia Roberts to play the Queen in its upcoming untitled Snow White feature, based on the Brothers Grimm story, directed by Tarsem Singh (Immortals, The Cell).
Pre-production has begun, and principal photography will start in April. The theatrical release date is set for June 29, 2012.
Snow White Rumors
Rumors, rumors! We’re here to share the latest news about the upcoming rival projects, Relativity Media’s The Brothers Grimm: Snow White and Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman.
So there you go, Julia Roberts and Charlize Theron are rumored to be playing the Evil Queen in two new Snow White movies.
Julia Roberts will reportedly be connecting with her evil side in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White, while Charlize Theron is set to star as queen in Snow White and the Huntsmen.
Brett Ratner to Adapt The Reluctant Communist
The latest rumor from Hollywood goes like this, Brett Ratner has picked up the rights to adapt Charles Robert Jenkins and Jim Frederick’s 2008 memoir The Reluctant Communist.
Ok we all know this director is quite busy lately.
He’s currently in pre-production on the upcoming caper comedy titled Tower Heist with Ben Stiller in the leading role, but still, something fresh and different is on the way…
Check out the description: “This is an incredible story of betrayal, love and the search for redemption set within the bizarre and Orwellian surroundings of North Korea during the late 20th century.
Tarsem Singh to Direct The Brothers Grimm: Snow White for Relativity?
Magic Mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?
Well, looks like she’s still the fairest one, since we have three different Snow White projects currently in development.
Is Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland the one we should blame for this fairy-tale Hollywood trend? Probably.
So, we basically have Relativity Snow White, Universal Snow White and one by Disney.
Noomi Rapace Arrives in Hollywood
Yeah, her name is familiar to all of us. Noomi Rapace is a girl who played the title character Lisbeth Salander, in the 2009 Swedish film based on the award-winning crime novel by Stieg Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor).
And yes, some of us actually thought she could be the perfect Lisbeth for David Fincher‘s upcoming English version of this story.
Ok, that’s not going to happen, since it’s already confirmed that Rooney Mara is next troubled-brilliant hacker, but that doesn’t mean Rapace is out of question when it comes to Hollywood, because it looks that she’s here to stay!
Noomi Rapace arrived in Los Angeles during the weekend where she met filmmakers McG, Joe Roth, Brett Ratner and Ridley Scott, as well as various producers, like Avi Arad and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura.
Brett Ratner NOT To Direct Hercules
Brett Ratner, director that was once attached to that Conan project, is now in talks to direct a new live-action Hercules movie for Millennium/Nu Image.
Or, at least, that was the latest Hollywood rumor…yesterday! So, today we’re here to update the whole thing, since Ratner is currently working on his next directorial project Tower Heist, and looks that he’s not very interested in this Avi Lerner’s produced project….
But, we all know Ratner is friends with Lerner (Hercules producer), so, does this mean that previously mentioned rumor could still be possible?
Well, according to Lerner’s PR: “while Ratner reads all of the producer’s scripts, he’s not actually in talks for Hercules, at least, not right now.
Lerner has been developing Hercules for more than three years, and while the project is still in the development stage, it has reportedly been gaining momentum lately. There are already few reports stating that:
Jason Sudeikis Joins Horrible Bosses
Jason Sudeikis is in final negotiations to join the cast of an upcoming Seth Gordon‘s comedy Horrible Bosses.
This way, Saturday Night Live star joins some interesting cast that already includes Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Aniston, Colin Farrell, Charlie Day and Jason Bateman.
This project is already described as “a dark, in-the-workplace comedy” or if you prefer, the movie is based around three friends who conspire to kill their bosses. Not bad at all!
So, Sudeikis will join Jason Bateman and Charlie Day as a “trio of friends who conspire to murder each others’ bosses. Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell are two of the offending office tyrants, while Jamie Foxx is a colorfully named scam artist who dishes killing advice to the three regular guys.”
Set to play the titular bosses are Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell, while Jamie Foxx has also been cast as a con man who gives the guys (terrible) advice on how to get away with the crime.
CONAN: Brett Ratner Out, James McTeigue In ?!
Director Brett Ratner is off the upcoming Conan remake. Joe Gatta, the producer behind the upcoming planned reboot of the “Conan the Barbarian” franchise, tells Empire Magazine that Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour,” “X-Men: The Last Stand”) is no longer attached to the project.
“We’re currently in the process of hiring a director.” For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen.”
