Indiana Jones Tops Hero Poll

Posted by Allan Ford 8 May, 2008 (0) Comment

Harrison FordActors Bruce Willis and Harrison Ford have been voted the greatest ever action heroes. Around a quarter of the 3,000 people polled remembered Ford fondly as Han Solo in Star Wars and swashbuckling archaeologist Indiana Jones, a role he takes up again later on this year - for the fourth time.

Willis also set the standard in the 1980s, as John McClane in Die Hard, a role he reprised for the fourth time last year.

Third place was taken by Last Action Hero star Arnold Schwarzenegger, with 15 per cent of the vote.

Newer breeds of action hero Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, and Daniel Craig as James Bond, achieved fourth and fifth-equal places in the poll.

Craig tied with Sylvester Stallone, Steven Seagal and Mel Gibson in joint fifth place with 5 per cent each. Read the rest of this entry

‘What Just Happened?’ to close Cannes

Posted by Allan Ford 17 April, 2008 (0) Comment

What Just Happened? What Just Happened?Barry Levinson’s tale of an embattled Hollywood producer, has been chosen to close this year’s Festival de Cannes.

The movie, written by Art Linson and based on his memoir about his experiences as a producer, stars Robert De Niro as Ben, whose professional and personal life comes undone during one turbulent week.

In a life-imitating-art turn, the film’s climactic scene takes place at the Festival de Cannes, with the fictional movie-within-a-movie that Ben has produced opening the festival.

The official announcement is expected sometime next week.

“Happened” also stars Catherine Keener as a tough-as-nails studio chief and features a number of stars, including Sean Penn and Bruce Willis, playing themselves in self-parodying roles.

The 2929 Prods. film generated strong buzz coming in to January’s Sundance Film Festival, with co-reps CAA and Cinetic expected to fetch at least a significant seven-figure price for it. But the movie received a mixed critical response and failed to catch fire with distributors, and its rights remain available.

The Cannes slot will represent a do-over of sorts on the acquisitions front, though it was unclear at press time who would rep it on the Croisette. 2929 was behind last year’s big Cannes sale, James Gray’s crime drama “We Own the Night,” which went to Sony in a reported eight-figure deal.

Strike Deal Can’t Save ‘Pinkville’

Posted by Allan Ford 7 January, 2008 (0) Comment

PinkvilleDespite an agreement between United Artists and the WGA coming into play that’ll allow the former to resume production/s again, Oliver Stone’s war pic “Pinkville” – which UA was shepherding – is still on hold - and by the sounds of it, it might stay on pause.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a well-placed source said that “Pinkville” would remain in turnaround despite any interim agreement UA inks with the WGA. That’s at least partly because cast who had been attached to the Stone project have since moved on to other productions.

“Pinkville” was to star Bruce Willis, Woody Harrelson and Channing Tatum. A WGA deal with UA would be notable because it would represent a first film company deal and allow UA to get cracking on new script development and execute any necessary rewrites on active projects.
