The Vampire’s Assistant Poster

Cinematical has debuted the official teaser poster for “The Vampire’s Assistant,” the movie based on the book series of the same name by Darren Shan.

The Vampire's Assistant

Synopsis: “The Vampire’s Assistant,” previously known as “Cirque du Freak” tells the frightening tale of a boy who unknowingly breaks a 200-year-old truce between two warring factions of vampires. Pulled into a fantastic life of misunderstood sideshow freaks and grotesque creatures of the night, one teen will vanish from the safety of a boring existence and fulfill his destiny in a place drawn from nightmares.

14-year-old Darren (Chris Kelly) was like most kids in his suburban neighborhood. He hung out with his best friend, got decent grades and usually stayed out of trouble. But when he and his buddy stumble upon a traveling freak show, things begin to change inside Darren. That’s the exact moment when a vampire named Larten Crepsley (John C. Reilly) turns him into something, well, bloodthirsty.

Newly undead, he joins the Cirque Du Freak, a touring sideshow filled with monstrous creatures from a snakeboy and a wolfman to a bearded lady (Salma Hayek) and a gigantic barker (Ken Watanabe). As Darren flexes his newfound powers in this dark world, he becomes a treasured pawn between the vampires and their deadlier counterparts. And while trying to survive, one boy will struggle to keep their brewing war from devouring what’s left of his humanity.

The film is directed by Paul Weitz (American Pie, Down to Earth, In Good Company, About a Boy), stars John C. Reilly (Magnolia, Chicago, The Aviator, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story), Ray Stevenson, Josh Hutcherson, Salma Hayek, Willem Dafoe and Ken Watanabe.

The first photo of Salma Hayek from the upcoming adventure/fantasy movie “Cirque du Freak” has been unveiled. The movie is based on the Darren Shan’s bestselling book-series for children.

Salma Hayek in "Cirque du Freak"

Hayek plays bearded lady, one of the performers at the Cirque Du Freak who can grow a beard all the way down to her feet, then suck it up again through her face as if she has no facial hair at all.

In the film, John C. Reilly plays a vampire who drafts a 14-year-old to serve as his assistant. The youth is turned into a half-vampire who breaks a 200-year truce between two warring bloodsucker factions. A young boy named Darren Shan meets a mysterious man at a freak show who turns out to be a Vampire. The vampire agrees to give him the only cure for his ill friend Steve if Darren agrees to become his assistant, and half vampire. After a series of events Darren must leave his normal life and go on the road with the Cirque Du Freak.

The first three books may be adapted for a stand alone movie, however there could be up to three sequels as the saga consisted of twelve books split into 4 trilogies.

“Cirque du Freak,” kid-friendly story, directed by Paul Weitz from the script by Brian Helgeland stars Chris Massoglia, Salma Hayek, John C. Reilly, Willem Dafoe and Josh Hutcherson.
