The trailer for the Coco Chanel biopic, “Coco, Before Chanel” ( “Coco, Avant Chanel“) has just hit the web, and the good news is: the trailer is in French with English sub-titles.

Audrey Tautou (Amélie, The Da Vinci Code) stars as Gabrielle Chanel, known as Coco, before she became famous. The film will feature dresses from the Chanel collection. Karl Lagerfeld, art director of the House of Chanel, will supervise the re-creation of costumes and accessories.

The film is directed and written by Anne Fontaine and Camille Fontaine. Also stars Alessandro Nivola, Marie Gillain, Emmanuelle Devos and Benoît Poelvoorde.
“Coco Avant Chanel” premieres in France on April 22nd and a US release date is still to be decided.

Karl Lagerfield Supervisor For “Coco Before Chanel”
Warner Bros. will produce and finance “Coco Before Chanel” (”Coco Avant Chanel“) a biopic of legendary French fashion designer Coco Chanel which is based on book by Edmonde Charles-Roux “L’irreguliere.”
Production will begin next month in Paris under the direction of Anne Fontaine. Her adaptation of “L’irreguliere” will focus on Chanel’s early years. Fontaine co-wrote the script with Camille Fontaine and Christopher Hampton.
The four-month shoot will begin on September 15th in Paris, with a planned 2009 release.
Audrey Tautou has been signed to portray Chanel, who was credited with revolutionising women’s fashion in the 20th century.
The director said in a statement:
“Audrey Tautou embodies all the qualities that made Coco such a fascinating individual, and the support we’ve received from The House of Chanel is incredibly gratifying.”
Chanel’s art director Karl Lagerfield will supervise the re-creation of the film’s wardrobe.

‘Coco Before Chanel’ with Audrey Tautou

Tautou is expected to star in film about Chanel before she became famous.
In the other Coco biopic french actress Marina Hands has been cast by director William Friedkin as fashion figure Coco Chanel in his forthcoming ‘Coco and Igor‘ about the tempestuous affair between Chanel and composer Igor Stravinsky.
His film takes place in 1913, at the time that Stravinsky’s ballet, “The Rite of Spring” opened as a catastrophic failure and Chanel’s perfume, Chanel No. 5, had become an enormous success.
I wonder if they’re going to include her love affair with a nazi spy Hans Gunther von Dincklage. Chanel’s affair during World War II resulted in some years of diminished popularity and an exile of sorts to Switzerland.
Chanel also was portrayed by Katharine Hepburn in the 1969 a Broadway musical ‘Coco’.
