Burn After Reading | George Clooney and Frances McDormand

Burn After Reading | George Clooney and Frances McDormand

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to follow up a movie as dark as “No Country for Old Men” with one as downright silly as “Burn After Reading,” which is why it works for the Coen brothers. Joel and Ethan have done this before — they made “Raising Arizona” after “Blood Simple“; “The Big Lebowski” followed “Fargo” — and if there’s one thing these brothers savor, it’s upending their audience’s expectations. The only thing people didn’t like about the almost uniformly beloved “No Country” was the film’s controversial ending and its handling of a sudden off-screen death of one of the main characters. In “Burn After Reading,” they push it farther, refusing to show you the chain of events that set the film’s entire blackmail plot into motion. Read the rest of this entry

Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Bridges In Men Who Stare at Goats

Posted by Fiona 12 September, 2008 (0) Comment

Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges are in negotiations to star opposite George Clooney in the “Men Who Stare at Goats.”

Based on the book by the Guardian columnist Jon Ronson, “Men Who Stare at Goats” is set in Iraq and centers on Bob Wilton (Ewan McGregor), a desperate reporter who stumbles upon the story of a lifetime when he meets Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who claims to be a former secret U.S. military psychic soldier who was reactivated post-9/11.

The book’s title refers to the telepathic ability to kill farmyard animals with just a thought.

“Men Who Stare at Goats” chronicles the two men’s travels through Iraq and offers glimpses into the supposedly real secret Army unit tasked with creating soldiers with paranormal powers.

Jeff Bridges will play Bill Django, the founder of the psychic soldier program and Lyn’s mentor. Spacey will play Larry Hooper, a former psychic soldier who is running a prison camp in Iraq.

Clooney’s producing partner Grant Heslov will direct the film from Peter Straughan’s script.

George Clooney | Venice Film Festival 2008

Jason Reitman (Juno) plans to direct “Up in the Air” with the hopes that George Clooney will star in an adaptation of the 2001 Walter Kirn novel, which Reitman adapted.

Clooney will play a corporate downsizer who is obsessed with collecting frequent flier miles.

The project is set up at the Montecito Picture Company, which has its first-look deal with DreamWorks.

Apparently Kirn’s novel experienced quite a journey to production that started around 2004. It was bought and packaged with a spec script by “The Longest Yard” scribe Sheldon Turner, with Griffin producing.

Reitman picked up the tome when he was cobbling together financing for his feature debut “Thank You for Smoking” and wrote 30 pages of a draft. He’s been writing his adaptation in the background for the past five years as he directed “Smoking” and “Juno.”

Clooney these days promoting his latest film, the Coen brothers’ farce “Burn After Reading” at Venice Film Festival.

Venice 2008 After Burning

Posted by Fiona 27 August, 2008 (0) Comment

Burn After Reading” (George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand) finally had its long awaited premiere at Venice Film Festival.

The movie re-unites Joel and Ethan Coen with George Clooney, who appeared in “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” and actress Frances McDormand (Joel’s wife) who won an Oscar for her role in their 1996 film “Fargo“.

“I’ve done three films with them and they call it my trilogy of idiots”

Clooney told reporters after a press screening (”O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, “Intolerable Cruelty” and “Burn After Reading”).

He plays a nervous, twitchy federal marshal whose extra-marital affairs bring him into contact with a gym instructor, played by Pitt, desperately seeking to extort money from a sacked CIA analyst whose memoirs go missing.

“After reading the part, which they said was hand-written for myself, I was not sure if I should be flattered or insulted”

said Brad Pitt, whose character the directors describe as a “knucklehead”.

Brad was asked how the chosen ones are doing.
