Guillermo del Toro is producing with Mark Johnson but more important is that del Toro co-wrote the script with Matthew Robbins.

Troy Nixey, a comicbook artist, will be making his directorial debut under the mentoring of del Toro. Del Toro first discovered Nixey after watching his short film “Latchkey’s Lament” that captured the tone del Toro wanted for this project.

“Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” is based on a 1973 ABC telepic about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with devilish creatures.
The film will shoot this summer in Melbourne as a “Guillermo del Toro Presentation.”

Juan Antonio Bayona

Word going around last week was that Drew Barrymore, James Mangold and Paul Weitz were al in consideration to direct Eclipse. Now that may turn out to be false as well.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guillermo del Toro protege Juan Antonio Bayona, director of the acclaimed Spanish-lanague horror film “The Orphanage“, is one of the finalists for the gig.

Summit Entertainment declined to comment about Bayona directing the film, with a rep adding that the studio is still looking at several candidates to helm the project.

The second movie in the Twilight saga, “New Moon,” will begin production this year with Chris Weitz at the helm.

In “New Moon,” Edward leaves Bella, sending Bella into a depression and a friendship with a werewolf. In the third book, “Eclipse,” that relationship triangle evolves, while evil empires begin to pursue Bella. [source: THR]

Guillermo del Toro To Adapt The Count of Monte Cristo?

Posted by Fiona 25 February, 2009 (0) Comment

The Count of Monte CristoGuillermo del Toro already has enough projects, but he revealed that his dream was adapting of “The Count of Monte Cristo” as a “gothic-western” titled “The Left Hand of Darkness.”

Speaking to MTV News, del Toro said that he hopes to one day helm a reinvention of classic novel by Alexandre Dumas.

“It’s a gothic-western retelling of “The Count of Monte Cristo,” and I co-wrote it with Kitt Carson and Matthew Robbins around 1993 to 1998. I wrote a lot of that during the kidnapping of my father, so it’s of a lot of rage,” referring to the 72 days his father was held in Mexico.

“I adore that screenplay. If I can fight, sue, or hit someone to keep the project with me, I will keep them. And I’ll get them made.”

The last big screen adaptation of the story was released in 2002 with James Caviezel and Guy Pearce in the lead roles.

Guillermo Del Toro’s ”Frankenstein”

Posted by Fiona 1 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Bernie Wrightson’s FrankensteinGuillermo del Toro said that he wants Doug Jones to star in his remake of ”Frankenstein.”

Del Toro admitted that Doug Jones who also played in his ”Pan’s Labyrinth” and ”Hellboy” (I,II) would be his ideal choice to play Victor Frankenstein’s monster.

He said: “For the monster I would love to have Doug Jones. I think he can do a fantastic job.”

Del Toro noted that the makeup and camera trickery he used on actor Ron Perlman in ”Hellboy” and ”Hellboy II: The Golden Army” could be replicated on Jones for ”Frankenstein.”

“Ron looks seven feet tall in Hellboy, but he’s not. I think we could do that with Doug, I would love to do it with him,” he said.

Del Toro’s favourite interpretation of the monster was from comic artist Berni Wrightson, saying: “He’s lanky and long and it’s gorgeous in a tragic way. Doug has all of those qualities.”
