Guillermo del Toro On The Original Cast And That Law Suit
Empire caught up today with Guillermo del Toro and asked him for an update on the current situation with The Hobbit. Many sites have been reporting that his deal to direct is signed and sealed and just waiting for an end to the writers’ strike before it’s announced. But that’s not so, he says.
“I wish it was definite, but it isn’t,” he told us. “It’s still in talks, there are still a lot of ‘T’s to cross and ‘I’s to dot. It’s certainly not certain yet…But, as far as I’m concerned, [if it was definite] I would be packed in ten seconds”.
He’s not worried at this time about the lawsuit that was revealed earlier this week.
“I heard that, but I’m quite zen about those things,” Del Toro continued. “Since that news broke, I have not exchanged a single phone call with my lawyer or my manager or anyone. They talk about it and I have received some emails, but, as far as I’m concerned, until I’m on board I should not worry about it. I read about it, but there’s nothing I can do about it. This week seems to be the lawsuit week in Hollywood”.
He would love to bring back actors from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy whose characters appear in the new films:
“I’ve been pretty much incredibly open about the things that I love and don’t love in the past. I’ve turned down huge franchises in the past because there are parts of that world I don’t gel with. The reason I took Blade 2 is because I love the characters that Stephen Norrington created and the actors he used. That times ten is the reason why I’m interested in The Hobbit”
‘Pan’s Labyrinth’ Wins World Cinema Award
Spanish fantasy film Pan’s Labyrinth has scooped BBC Four’s Pioneer World Cinema Award 2008.
The movie, which has won three Oscars and three BAFTAs, lifted the prize at last night’s ceremony at the BFI Southbank in London.
Director Guillermo del Toro flew from Paris to collect the award from actress Catherine Deneuve.
He said: “I am very humbled by the competition and the nominations so I am very happy to have won this award. I am extremely thankful because world cinema seems to be not only about geography of the world out there, but about charting the world within us.
“Very often people think that the only way to tell the truth is through reality. So I find, by my own experience, irreality is sometimes a better tool to tell the truth.”
The movie was chosen from a shortlist of five by a panel consisting of actor Christopher Eccleston, documentary-maker Nick Broomfield and actress Archie Panjabi.
It beat Oscar-nominated drama The Lives Of Others, as well as The Science Of Sleep, Climates and Syndromes And A Century.
Del Toro In Talks For ‘The Hobbit’?
The Hollywood Reporter is, well, reporting that Guillermo Del Toro is now officially in talks to direct both The Hobbit and its sequel. This. Is. Awesome.
Their story doesn’t really hold any concrete facts or give us any new information on the film, but it’s very encouraging to hear that Del Toro is at the very least on the shortlist of directors who might handle the prequels to Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Del Toro already has a lot of films on his plate, so he’d have to clean house a little if he took this on. Principal photography is set to start in 2009. Del Toro is currently finishing off ‘Hellboy 2′ and then had plans to make a new version of Frankenstein, a long-planned adaptation of HP Lovecraft’s At The Mountain’s Of Madness and ghost story 3993.
He’d also expressed some interest in directing the final Harry Potter movie. But when we spoke to the series producer David Heyman recently he said that Del Toro was sadly not really in the running because “he’s rather busy”, despite Del Toro telling Heyman that he’d like to make the movie because “I want to kill your children”. We guess you can’t have everything. We gladly sacrifice all of those other projects to see Del Toro’s take on ‘The ‘Hobbit.
Del Toro Wants To Direct Harry Potter 7
Since the third film, the Harry Potter movies have been good, but we’ve yet to see a great big screen translation of the tales of the boy wizard. That could potentially change if Warner Bros listens to Guillermo Del Toro’s statement that he’d like to direct the final chapter in the movie septology (or whatever the hell you call a seven parter).
In a recent interview, Del Toro told MTV, ““I’m definitely interested [in directing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows], now that the movies have grown darker. They have a contrast between the gloomy existence of the kid and the world he’s exposed to. They have evolved into a really nice universe.”
Del Toro was once in the running to direct Prisoner of Azkaban, which went to Alfonso Cuaron. But he say he loves the final book. “I got it for my daughter and she was like ‘When are you going to give it to me?’” he stated. “I read it and I was very moved by the ending. It ends very much like a Dickens novel”. Read the rest of this entry
Del Toro Direct ‘The Hobbit’?
On Thursday ‘Variety’ seemed to insinuate that Sam Raimi was the frontrunner to direct ‘The Hobbit’ films, but a new interview at Entertainment Weekly seems to suggest that Guillermo del Toro may not exactly be out of the running.
When asked about the feature Del Toro responded, “You know, I think I’ve been abroad too long. I’ve heard some rumblings, but nothing official. I don’t want to think about it because it’s such an eventuality. It’s the only Tolkien book I read. I tried my best to read ‘Lord of the Rings’, the trilogy. I could not. I could not. They were very dense. And then one day, I bought ‘The Hobbit’. I read it and I loved it. So it would be a privilege. But listen, I wish I knew. At this stage, after ‘Hellboy’, I’m unemployed.”
However, as for his comments, the one thing that sticks out is when he says ‘because it’s such an eventuality.’ This leads us to believe that he knows a little more than he is leading on.
