James McAvoyScottish actor James McAvoy has denied rumors that he will play Bilbo Baggins in the movie adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s “The Hobbit“.Speaking at a press conference for new film Wanted, he said:

“It’s not true. It’s all internet rumouring and nothing else I’m afraid. Sorry.”

Guillermo del Toro was confirmed in April as director of “The Hobbit” and a second film, which takes place in the 60 years between “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings“.

Sir Ian McKellen, who played Gandalf in the movie trilogy, is the only actor that has confirmed he would reprise his role in “The Hobbit” and the bridge film.

“The Hobbit” and its sequel will be shot back to back in New Zealand from next year and scheduled to be released in 2011 and 2012.

L.A. Film Fest Mixes Indies and Studio Fare

This just may be the best time of year in L.A. As the Los Angeles Dodgers hit the field and the jacaranda trees bloom, Film Independent will take over Westwood Village for the Los Angeles Film Festival, June 19-29. With more than 275 screenings and events, and with attendance expected to top 100,000, the 2008 LAFF will once again be one of the biggest film events of the year in a town obsessed with movies.

“There are so many film festivals around the world and even in this city. What we try to do is create something that is very unique, that’s very L.A.,” said LAFF director Rich Raddon. The festival, which last year opened with Transformers, continues the trend of screening studio and independent films by opening June 19 with Timur Bekmambetov’s Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie and James McAvoy. Another action flick based on a comic book, Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army, will close the festival June 28.Raddon came under fire in the press last year for featuring a blockbuster in a festival known as a platform for low-budget indies. He said it might seem LAFF is sending a mixed message by screening Wanted and Hellboy II alongside films such as The Choir, Michael Davie’s documentary about life in South Africa’s largest penitentiary (June 22 and 26). However, the festival has always made a point of offering something for everyone. Read the rest of this entry

New ‘Hellboy 2′ Poster

‘Hellboy II: The Golden Army’ international poster

Universal provided Empire with an exclusive new international poster for “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” featuring Hellboy (Ron Perlman) holding Liz Sherman (Selma Blair).

With a signature blend of action, humor and character-based spectacle, the saga of the world’s toughest, kitten-loving hero from Hell continues to unfold in “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” Bigger muscle, badder weapons and more ungodly villains arrive in an epic vision of imagination from Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy).

The sequel tells what happens when an ancient truce between humankind and the invisible realm is broken, and hell on Earth is ready to erupt. Hellboy (Ron Perlman), along with his expanding team in the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense - pyrokinetic girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), aquatic empath Abe (Doug Jones) and protoplasmic mystic Johann - will travel between the surface strata and the unseen magical one, where creatures of fantasy become corporeal. And Hellboy, a creature of two worlds who’s accepted by neither, must choose between the life he knows and an unknown destiny that beckons him.

Hellboy 2‘ is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11

James McAvoy

James McAvoy is set to play Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit.

McAvoy is in talks to play the fantasy hero in the big screen adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s book. He played the faun, Mr. Tumnus in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.

“A number of names have privately been doing the rounds, including Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Black but James is the one the film’s bosses really want,” an industry source said. “They’re expected to have talks with him soon so hopefully it could be confirmed in the not too distant future.”

Director Guillermo del Toro has refused to commen, only saying: “I can tell you it’s down to a few names that we all agree upon. For our first choice we all said the same name, it was completely magical.”

The Hobbit is the prequel to the Lord Of The Rings trilogy. In the recent movies directed by Peter Jackson, Baggins was played by Ian Holme.

The latest movie is being produced by Jackson, whose interpretation of the original novels won critical acclaim and a host of Oscars, including Best Picture for Return of the King.
