Kevin Smith Buys His Own Red State For Self-Distribution

Kevin Smith plans to release his new horror movie Red State himself. The writer-director announced that he himself would be distributing the film and promptly bought the rights to do so for $20at the film’s first public screening at the Eccles Theatre on Sunday night.

From the Eccles stage as part of a long and expletively laced speech after the movie ended during which he championed Harvey Weinstein (co-founder of Miramax Films) as an inspiration and mentor, Smith said

What we need to prove is that anyone can release a movie. Indie film isn’t dead, it just grew up. It is just indie film 2.0 now. In indie film 2.0, we don’t let them sell our movie, we sell our movie ourselves.”

The Weinstein Company have released a seductive new poster for the currently NC-17 rated Blue Valentine, which is directed by Derek Cianfrance and stars Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, John Doman, Maryann Plunkett

Synopsis: A complex portrait of a contemporary American marriage, “Blue Valentine” tells the story of David and Cindy, a couple who have been together for several years but who are at an impasse in their relationship. While Cindy has blossomed into a woman with opportunities and options, David is still the same person he was when they met, and is unable to accept either Cindy’s growth or his lack of it. Innovatively structured, the narrative unfolds in two distinct time frames, juxtaposing scenes of first love and youthful sexuality, with those of disenchantment and discord.

Paulo Coelho’s ‘The Alchemist’ to be filmed by Laurence Fishburne and Harvey Weinstein

‘The Alchemist’, the best-selling book by Paulo Coelho will be turned into a film.

Laurence Fishburne will direct, write and star in the $60 million production, which is being made by Harvey Weinstein.

‘The Alchemist’ book has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and translated into 67 languages. Such is its enduring appeal, it is currently at number six on The New York Times bestseller list, 20 years after its first publication.

It tells the story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who travels across the Egyptian desert in search of treasure, leading to an encounter with an alchemist who teaches him the meaning of life.
