Composer Hans Zimmer Talk About ‘Dark Knight’

Hans Zimmer

Composer Hans Zimmer talked to Bloomberg about working on The Dark Knight score with fellow composer James Newton Howard. Here are several clips from the interview:

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer was struggling to find the right music to represent the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” the new Batman movie scheduled for release this summer.

Zimmer, who wrote the scores for “The Lion King,” “Gladiator” and more than 100 other films, had already composed a two-note signature for the fiendish character, played by the late Heath Ledger. But he wanted to expand that sound to symbolize the Joker’s penchant for anarchy.

I’ve been sitting here all night trying to find out what else to do with those two notes,” Zimmer said during an interview last month at his Santa Monica, California, studio.

Zimmer, who collaborated on the score with James Newton Howard, said Ledger’s death from an accidental drug overdose in January wouldn’t change his musical approach to the Joker. The composer said the best tribute would be an accurate reflection of Ledger’s portrayal.

The worst thing I can do is stray from that course and not be rigorous about his performance,” the tall, balding composer said in a German accent that reflects his native country.

Christian Bale wants to complete a trilogy of Batman films

Posted by Fiona 18 March, 2008 (0) Comment

christian-bale.jpgChristian Bale would be keen to take on a third Batman movie, provided director Christopher Nolan was involved, according to an interview in the new edition of Entertainment Weekly.

Bale said he believed the superhero’s current celluloid incarnation, which started with Nolan’s Batman Begins in 2005 and continues with this summer’s The Dark Knight, would work best as a trilogy.

“Knowing the Dark Knight story, I would like very much to complete a trilogy, and I think that knowing the story of The Dark Knight, it leaves you anticipating something that really can get very, very interesting for a third. Now, the question would be: Is Chris going to be doing it? Because to me I find it tricky to imagine working on it without it being a collaboration with Chris.”

Bale also spoke about working with the late Heath Ledger, who plays the Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.

“What was so great to see with Heath is just how seriously he took it. And we don’t mean in any way to sound sort of pretentious with that, but just in the fact that if we don’t take it seriously, then how can any audience ever take it seriously? And he did one hell of a job.”

Christopher Nolan Unveils ‘The Dark Knight’

Posted by Fiona 17 March, 2008 (0) Comment

heath-ledger.jpgA sneak preview of The Dark Knight was attended by director Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale over the weekend.

Exhibitors were shown the opening sequence at industry convention ShoWest and Nolan explained that all of Heath Ledger’s scenes as The Joker remain as they were before his tragic death.

“He was immensely proud of the work he did on the film”, said Nolan. “I feel a great burden to present that in an undistorted form.”

“I hope that this can be seen as a celebration of his work”, Bale added.

“He did a phenomenal job. It was a real joy working with the man. It was a joy knowing him as well. I liked him a great deal, and I liked also how seriously he took his work.”

The film opens 25th July.

‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus’ Will Not Be Altered

Posted by Fiona 10 March, 2008 (0) Comment

Work on ‘The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus‘ resumed on Monday after Heath Ledger’s death halted filming on the project earlier this year.

In his honor, Hollywood superstars Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell and Jude Law have signed up to feature in the film, which is due for release next year.

However, the film’s director, Terry Gilliam, and producers have promised to preserve every detail of Ledger’s final performance, and that the hiring of the three new stars will not affect his work.

Producers working on Heath Ledger’s final film have vowed not to alter the tragic star’s last performance, even though the actor never got the chance to complete the project before his untimely death.

A statement released by the movie’s producers reads,

“Since the format of the story allows for the preservation of his entire performance, at no point will Heath’s work be modified or altered through the use of digital technology.

“Each of the parts played by Johnny, Colin and Jude is representative of the many aspects of the character that Heath was playing.”

“I am delighted that Heath’s brilliant performance can be shared with the world.

“We are looking forward to finishing the movie and, through the film, with a modicum of humility, being able to touch people’s hearts and souls as Heath was able to do.” Gilliam said.

Ledger had finished shooting scenes for the fantasy movie in London just days before he was found dead in his New York apartment in January.
