The Kung Fu Kid, Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan

Take a look at the first pictures of Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan on the set of The Karate Kid remake, The Kung Fu Kid. Filming on the remake has begun in Beijing, and SpoilerTV was able to snap a few photos of all the action.

The new movie stars Chan as the wise kung-fu master, and Smith will play the young disciple.

Directed by Harald Zwart (One Night at McCool’s, The Pink Panther 2) and written by Chris Murphy and Steven Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) ,  The Kung Fu Kid is scheduled to hit theaters on June 11th, 2010.

Kung Fu Kid Starts Production

According to AP, “Kung Fu Kid,” a remake of the 1984 classic, “Karate Kid,” started principal photography on Saturday.

Jaden Smith (Will Smith’s kid ) is set to star as the new kid, and Jackie Chan will play the mentor, the iconic role played by the late great Pat Morita. Taraji P. Henson will play Jaden’s mom.

Jackie Chan and Will Smith, along with Smith’s parents and sister Willow, attended a traditional Chinese ceremony to mark the start of the shoot.

The remake will be directed by Harald Zwart, (The Pink Panther 2, One Night at McCool’s). The screenplay was penned by Steve Conrad (The Pursuit of Happyness) and Chris Murphy.

“Kung Fu Kid” is set for a June 11, 2010 release.

Jackie Chan to Play Miyagi Role in “Karate Kid” Remake

EW  is reporting that Jackie Chan is in is in negotiations for “The Karate Kid” remake which is set to star 10-years-old Will Smith’s son Jaden Smith. EW has also revealed that Harold Zwart (The Pink Panther 2) will direct the upcoming remake.

The speculation of Chan tackling Miyagi role could be true since previously the movie’s producer Will Smith has shared to MTV that the movie will be set in China.

“We’re making it with the China Film Group, so it’ll be based in Beijing. Mr. Miyagi was originally Japanese, so there’ll be a Chinese adaptation to it.”

Chris Murphy is on board to pen the screenplay.

The original “Karate Kid” stars Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso and Pat Morita as Mr. Miyagi. It centers on LaRusso, who has been a victim of school bully. Meeting a kind and humble Okinawan immigrant, Mr. Miyagi, he then learns to defend himself using karate.

Jackie Chan Signs for “The Spy Next Door”

Jackie ChanJackie Chan has signed to star in the action comedy “The Spy Next Door” which will be directed by Brian Levant and financed by Relativity Media.

Robert Simonds (”The Pink Panther” and “Big Daddy”) is tapped to produce the film with Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh. Solon So and Tucker Tooley are executive producing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jonathan Bernstein and Jim Greer are writing the screenplay for “The Spy Next Door”, which centers on a man (Jackie Chan) who is called to baby-sit his neighbor’s children and winds up having to fight off secret agents after one of the kids inadvertently downloads a secret code. No production date has been set.

Chan’s most recent movie, “The Forbidden Kingdom“, took $51 million at the US box office earlier this year.

Jackie Chan Plans Chinese Earthquake Film

Jackie ChanMartial arts action hero Jackie Chan is planning to make a film about the Chinese earthquake to raise money for its survivors.He said he was in meetings with directors and scriptwriters to get the venture into production.

“I want to make the movie about the earthquake because there’s so many touching stories,” he said.

He said he had already donated $1.4m (£700,000) to help the victims of the quake, which killed around 60,000 people on May 12th.

“I believe there are so many touching stories so we’re going to have a big meeting to see what happens,” Chan said of his discussions with film-makers.

“I want through the movie to show the whole world, I really want to salute the whole army of China, really.”

The Rush Hour star added that around 100 Asian artists would take part in charity events in Hong Kong and Chengdu, Sichuan’s capital, next month.

New ‘Kung Fu Panda’ Trailer

A new trailer for DreamWorks‘ latest animated feature, Kung Fu Panda, has just debuted online. The movie stars Jack Black as Po, a lazy, irreverent slacker panda, who must somehow become a Kung Fu Master in order to save the Valley of Peace from a villainous snow leopard. The movie boasts an impressive voice cast, which features Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu and Michael Clarke Duncan.

The writers and directors for “Kung Fu Panda” are very inexperienced, but have worked on the animated show “Father of the Pride,” and have written several “King of the Hill” episodes. Kung Fu Panda opens on June 6.

Jet Li Alters Script To Suit Western Viewers

Jet Li said he has changed the script of his upcoming movie with fellow action star Jackie Chan to better suit Western tastes, an online news site reported. Li said “The Forbidden Kingdom” was conceived as a film about Chinese mythology’s monkey king and he thought the idea of a kung fu fighting monkey was too far-fetched for Western viewers, according to an interview transcript posted on the Chinese news website Sina.com.

Li said he altered the script, inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West,” to turn the story into a child’s dream about Chinese mythology. He said this would make characters with special powers like the monkey king more believable to a Western audience. Continue Reading…
