Filmmakers About Filmmaking

Director's Chair | Filmmakers About FilmmakingWhat’s the last movie you’ve watched guys?

This report will have to do a lot with all those great filmmakers that make us film-freaks, or, should I say – filmophiles? But, let me just ask you one more thing. Have you ever dreamed of making your own movie? And if you have, who’s your favorite filmmaker?

Scorsese, Cameron, Kubrick maybe? What words or advice would you want to hear from your favorite helmer?

So, what’s the best advice you can get about the whole thing?

“Anybody can direct a picture once they know the fundamentals. Directing is not a mystery, it’s not an art. The main thing about directing is: photograph the people’s eyes.” That’s exactly what John Ford, man who made some of the most iconic American westerns of all time has to say about his work.

On the other hand, Stanley Kubrick thinks that “…a film is – or should be – more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.” That’s an interesting one, you must admit, although I’m not quite sure if that worked out for his A Clockwork Orange. I mean, that one looks well-planned from the beginning.

Titanic

I guess we’re all excited about James Cameron‘s Titanic 3D. Even you! Yeah, you out there, who hate 3D, I know you’re reading this, and I know you’re waiting to hear some new details about the whole thing.

After all, we’re talking about 3D conversion of 1997 blockbuster that remained the highest-grossing film in history for twelve years, until Avatar surpassed it in 2010.

So, here’s the thing. You already know that Titanic 3D will be re-released in theaters on April 6th, 2012 to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the original tragedy, but what you don’t know is that Cameron premiered 15 minutes of a 3D converted movie at the international exhibitor event CineEurope!

Here’s what Cameron shared with all of us:

“It ends the same way, though, I just wanted to put that out. Actually we spent around $5 million trying to invent a time machine so I could travel back and shoot the original film in 3D. It’s a painstaking process. I would never want to do it if I didn’t have to. If you have the choice, you should definitely do it in 3D from the start.”

Directors and Producers Write Open Letter Protesting Premium VOD

By Fiona | Apr 21, 2011 | Movie News (0) Comment

Universal, Sony, Warner Bros, 20 Century Fox

From time to time directors and producers from all over the world sit down and write an open letter. When was the last time that actually happened? I have no idea, but I do know that right now there’s an open letter all over the internet that comes straight from 23 leading directors and producers, and that list includes James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow, Michael Bay, Guillermo del Toro, Peter Jackson, Michael Mann, Gore Verbinski and for the full list check out the rest of this report.

First of all let me tell you that all of them have signed an open letter opposing a pricy new premium VOD service that puts movies from Warner Bros., Sony, Universal and 20th Century Fox in homes only 60 days after a film’s theatrical release.

Here’s what they all had to say in a letter:

“We are the artists and business professionals who help make the movie business great. We produce and direct movies. We work on the business deals that help get movies made. At the end of the day, we are also simply big movie fans.

Lately, there’s been a lot of talk by leaders at some major studios and cable companies about early-to-the-home “premium video-on-demand.” In this proposed distribution model, new movies can be shown in homes while these same films are still in their theatrical run. In this scenario, those who own televisions with an HDMI input would be able to order a film through their cable system or an Internet provider as a digital rental. Terms and timing have yet to be made concrete, but there has been talk of windows of 60 days after theatrical release at a price of $30.
