The Day The Earth Stood Still … Who Will Be Saved?

Twentieth Century Fox has teamed with Moxie Interactive, to create a new application that allows the world to decide who and what will be saved when the earth “stands still”. It’s part of a global participation campaign for Fox’s upcoming movie, The Day The Earth Stood Still. The film stars Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connelly in the ultimate alien invasion movie. The digital campaign utilizes seven of the world’s top social networks – including MySpace, Facebook, Bebo and Netlog – across 10 languages.

In the film, a renowned scientist (Jennifer Connelly) finds herself face to face with an alien called Klaatu (Keanu Reeves), who has traveled across the universe to warn of an impending global crisis. She quickly discovers the deadly ramifications of Klaatu’s claim that he is “a friend to the Earth”. Now she must find a way to convince the entity who was sent to destroy us that mankind is worth saving – but it may be too late.

Day the Earth Stood Still

20th Century Fox has released this new international trailer for “The Day the Earth Stood Still” which gives us a nice long look at the robot Gort.

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” is 20th Century Fox’s contemporary reinvention of its 1951 classic. Keanu Reeves portrays Klaatu, an alien whose arrival on our planet triggers a global upheaval. As governments and scientists race to unravel the mystery behind the visitor’s appearance, a woman (Jennifer Connelly) and her young stepson get caught up in his mission – and come to understand the ramifications of his being a self-described “friend to the Earth.”

The director Scott Derrickson talks about original movie and its remake:

“It was intentional. I certainly took a lot of time to explore other possibilities. It wasn’t just a foregone conclusion in my mind that we would be sticking to the original. I tried looking at a lot of different possibilities, worked on a lot of different ideas with artists and just always a nagging sense that there was something right about the way the original, that there was something about this alien entity choosing a human form or being in a human form that had value even by modern standards, not by 1950 standards. I also am such a fan of the original film. You have to also just have some respect for Gort. Gort is Gort. There’s no question what we designed pays homage to the original.”

Concept artist Lorin Wood working on “The Day The Earth Stood Still” remake, and posted a concept rendering of Gort from the new film.

Remake director Scott Derrickson recently referenced having considered multiple approaches to Gort, including ideas which deviated significantly from the “classic robot” design of Robert Wise’s 1951 film.
