The Walt Disney Studios Paves the Way for Digital 3D Movie Viewing at Home

Continuing its leadership in the advancement of 3D entertainment, The Walt Disney Studios today announced plans to start releasing Disney Digital 3D content for the home on Blu-ray Disc beginning in 2010 with Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” and a special 3D Showcase Disc. Disney’s new Digital 3D content for the home on Blu-ray(TM) will be made available in coordination with hardware manufacturers’ upcoming release of new 3D home entertainment systems so that consumers can experience the magic of Disney 3D in their home upon installation

“The Walt Disney Studios has produced and released more 3D content than any other major studio to date and remains at the forefront in the continued innovation and development of today’s most advanced digital 3D and Blu-ray technology,”

commented Bob Chapek, President of Distribution for The Walt Disney Studios.

Charles Dickens’ beloved holiday story “A Christmas Carol” gets the 3D treatment, and the result is a visually stunning big-screen experience I’m sure many cinema goers out there will enjoy to the fullest extent. As far as I’m concerned, my feelings about this one are mixed.
The story doesn’t really require a lengthy introduction. The holiday season is in full swing, and Ebenezer Scrooge (Jim Carrey) despises Christmas and everyone celebrating it. It’s hard to believe that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol 166 years ago, but here we are in 2009 and Robert Zemeckis has spent $180 million to produce a motion-capture animated film that retells the famous story. The movie opens this weekend on more than 2,000 digital 3D screens and features the voices of Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright Penn. 62nd Cannes Film Festival To Premiere Zemeckis’ 3D Christmas Carol

Robert Zemeckis‘ 3-D motion capture adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale “A Christmas Carol” will be shown on May 18, 2009 at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Disney studio has announced.

“A Christmas Carol” directed by Robert Zemeckis stars Jim Carrey, Colin Firth, Robin Wright Penn and Gary Oldman.

In the new version of Dickens’s story, Carrey takes on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. Firth will star as Scrooge’s nephew Fred, while Gary Oldman plays Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim.

Ebenezer Scrooge (Carrey) begins the Christmas holiday with his usual miserly contempt, barking at his faithful clerk (Gary Oldman) and his cheery nephew (Firth). But when the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come take him on an eye-opening journey revealing truths Old Scrooge is reluctant to face, he must open his heart to undo years of ill will before it’s too late. “A Christmas Carol” is scheduled to appear at IMAX and conventional theaters on November 6th.
