A biopic about legendary Beatles singer John Lennon is going to be directed by Sam Taylor-Wood. Entitled “Nowhere Boy“, the film has been penned by Matt Greenhalgh (won a BAFTA award for his work on the Joy Division movie “Control“), which focuses on the the acclaimed singer/songwriter’s troubled teenage as told by his half-sister, Julia Baird through her memoirs.

The movie will provide a deeper look into his relationship with his mother who abandoned him and his Aunt Mimi who raised him with a strict authority. It will also show how Lennon find his only escape in music and art as well as in his friendship with Paul McCartney.

Explaining the reason behind the choosing of the plot, director Sam Taylor-Wood said:

“The women in John’s early life truly shaped who he became and the strengths and weaknesses of their relationships are central to this film.”

Casting is currently underway, with filming set to take place on location in Lennon’s hometown in Liverpool.

Sales and finance house HanWay Films is handling worldwide sales and will be trying to get sellers to tune in at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. American studios including Miramax and Focus are said to be interested in acquiring the rights to the movie.

Yoko Ono sues filmmakers

Yoko OnoYoko Ono is taking legal action against the producers of a documentary after they used John Lennon hit ‘Imagine‘ without permission.

Ono and sons Sean and Julian filed a lawsuit in Manhattan against Premise Media, makers of ‘Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed‘, claims the BBC.

Ono said the film’s credits made it appear that she had authorised the use of the track, sparking accusations on the internet that she was “selling out”.

The firm argued that the single’s inclusion is protected by the fair use doctrine, which allows the use of copyrighted materials without permission for the purposes of commentary and criticism. It also stressed that it had used “a very small portion of the song”.

The documentary, currently at number ten in the US box office chart, examines alleged discrimination against teachers who support the intelligent design theory of evolution.

The lawsuit aims to prevent Premise Media, C&S Production LP and Rocky Mountain Pictures from continuing to use ‘Imagine’ in the film. It is also seeking unspecified financial damages.
