Johnny Depp is reteaming with “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy director Gore Verbinski for “Rango,” an animated feature for Paramount.

The Paramount movie is about a household pet (Depp) that goes on an adventure to discover its true self. And while that may seem thuddingly generic and been-there-done-that, we’re trusting that Depp and Verbinski will bring a fresh approach to this material. And hiring John Logan to write the script isn’t a bad start.

Last time Depp lent his voice for an animated character was for clay-animated movie “Corpse Bride” back in 2005

John Logan (The Aviator) has written the script from an idea hatched by Verbinski. Verbinski will work with Industrial Light & Magic on the animation.

Rango aims to use cutting-edge animation techniques that “will allow us to capture and translate every aspect of Johnny’s performance, using it to drive the computer-generated character in a way that has yet to be seen in an animated feature,” Verbinski said.

Depp is set to start working on the film in January. Verbinski will direct the project as he continues to develop an adaptation of the Take-Two video game “BioShock” for Universal.

Johnny Depp is back on “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote”

Johnny DeppTerry Gilliam had to abandon filming on “The Man Who Killed Don Quixote” after a series of accidents forced insurers to pull the plug.

But Gilliam returns to the film project with Johnny Depp. He is hopeful the project can be recovered, eight years after filming first began.

“As far as we’re concerned, it’s on,” Gilliam told the Independent.

“When Johnny’s ready, we’re ready. We’re just talking about dates to film. Basically it all depends on his schedule but otherwise we’re set. It will be next year some time, before next summer anyway.”

“We’re going to completely re-shoot it,” he told. “The intervening years have taught me that I can actually write a much better film. I’m excited it’s going to get done at last.”

Gilliam had serious problems earlier this year - his “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” was put on hold due to the death of the leading man, Heath Ledger.

Posted by Allan Ford 1 August, 2008 (0) Comment

With “The Dark Knight bringing in over $400 million for Warner Brothers, it’s no surprise that everyone is trying to figure out the casting of the sequel.

Johnny Depp - The Riddler

Speculations of Batman’s future villains apparently have moved on from which foes to be featured in the possible follow-up of “The Dark Knight” to who are going to portray them.

It was recently reported that Angelina Jolie has been talking to studio executives about taking the role of Catwoman in the sequel to “The Dark Knight.”

UK’s Daily Telegraph has quoted their unnamed source who said that Warner Bros is targeting Johnny Depp to play The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman to take the role of The Penguin. The role of the Riddler has previously been tackled by Frank Gorshin in the television version of Batman, with Jim Carrey wearing the question-mark covered tights in Batman Forever. Meanwhile, the Penguin was handled on television by the incomparable Burgess Meredith, and a distinctively disgusting Penguin was played by Danny DeVito in Batman Returns.

“[Producers] are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp,” said a source. “Johnny’s a pro. He’ll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own.
