FilmDistrict has released the final poster and 15 high resolution photos from The Rum Diary – In Theatres October 28th, 2011! Based on the debut novel by Hunter S. Check out two new clips from Johnny Depp’s new movie The Rum Diary! The film is based on a novel of the same name by Hunter S. Thompson, which fictionalized the late writer’s early days as a journalist living in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and drinking copious amounts of rum while working for an English-language newspaper. Thompson wrote the novel in the early 1960s but it was not published until 1998.

Another poster and 43 new photos have been released to promote Johnny Depp‘s upcoming movie, Rum Diary, which hits theaters nationwide on October 28.
Depp is Paul Kemp in The Rum Diary, a journalist who heads to Puerto Rico for a position at a daily newspaper. In typical Hunter S. Thompson fashion, whose book the film is based on, Kemp winds up spending time with an interesting cast of characters with trouble sure to ensue.

FilmDistrict to Release The Rum Diary on October 28th
I’m sure you’re all excited about The Rum Diary project, and not (just) because Johnny Depp stars in it, so you’ll be glad to learn that FilmDistrict will release Bruce Robinson‘s movie on October 28, based on the early Hunter S. Thompson novel that was ultimately published in 1998.
The Rum Diary has quite interesting cast on board, which also includes Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard, Michael Rispoli, Richard Jenkins and Giovanni Ribisi.
So, this project tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Depp). Tired of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local San Juan newspaper run by the downtrodden editor Lotterman (Jenkins).

Begun in 1959 by a then-twenty-two-year-old Hunter S. Thompson, The Rum Diary details the life and events of Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. Thompson delivers a potent story that pushes the sometimes-brutal truth of human relations into your face in such a way that it would be absurd to not laugh.

The Rum Diary follows Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp), a divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist who decides to kick around in San Juan until his ship comes in, working as a journalist for a newspaper that’s on its last legs, drinking gallons of rum and experimenting with LSD. With his new friend Bob Sala by his side, Kemp becomes entangled in a corrupt hotel development scheme with a slick PR consultant named Sanderson.
