“Tyson” Poster

Tyson

Thanks to Cinematical, we now have the official poster for the upcoming Mike Tyson documentary,  “Tyson.”

Tyson” is an intimate and moving no-holds-barred portrait of a humbled Mike Tyson told in the words of the former heavyweight champion.

In “Tyson”, Mike Tyson examines his own life in and out of the ring with a candor, eloquence and vulnerability that is by turns poignant , funny and never less than brutally honest. Through a deft mixture of original interviews and archival footage and photographs, a surprisingly complex, fully-rounded human being emerges.

The film ranges from Mike’s earliest memories of growing up on the mean streets of Brooklyn through his entry into the world of boxing, including his rollercoaster ride through the funhouse of worldwide fame and his fortunes won and lost.

“Tyson” offers much more than a documentary about a former heavyweight champ — it is the story of a legendary and uniquely controversial international athletic icon, a figure conjuring radical questions of race and class, and a man who arose from the most debased circumstances and soared to seemingly unlimited heights, followed by destruction generated by hubris, like a character out of classical tragedy

Mike Tyson Documentary ‘Tyson’ at Cannes

Posted by Allan Ford 19 May, 2008 (0) Comment

Mike Tyson, Cannes 2008.

The Cannes film festival in France may seem like an odd place for former heavyweight champion of the world Mike Tyson to be hanging out, but right now Tyson is there getting a receptive reception due to the new film to be released on his life.

The documentary, “Tyson,” directed by U.S film maker James Toback, is an all-out revelation of “Iron” Mike’s turbulent life – both in and out of the boxing ring. Toback has selected hours upon hours of footage of Tyson, both of fights and interviews, and has used it all to give an accurate account of Mike Tyson’s life – from his early days in Brooklyn to his days at the top of the sporting world. The movie then goes on to show Tyson’s almost unbelievable fall from grace.

Film maker Toback has known Tyson for years, and it was due to this trust that Mike opened up and spoke about everything and anything regarding his quite incredible life. As such the film is almost certainly going to be un-missable viewing. Tyson himself was somewhat overwhelmed as the film got its cheers in Cannes.
Tyson:

“I had no idea this thing was ever going to make it to this grand scale here,” I feel totally overwhelmed. I’ve lived a wild and strange life. I’ve used drugs, I’ve had physical altercations with dangerous people, people were angry. I’ve slept with guys’ wives, they wanted to kill me. I’m just happy to be here. It’s just a miracle. I feel good about being here with you.”

Selecting from hours of footage and mixing fight sequences with interviews and photographs, Toback tells the story of the boxer’s climb from his impoverished New York childhood to the pinnacle of his sport and his dramatic fall.

Like Serbian director Emir Kusturica’s documentary on Argentine soccer star Diego Maradona, showing out of competition next week, “Tyson” paints the picture of a charismatic but troubled champion whose image transcended his sport.

Jamie FoxxThe ‘Ray’ actor has already started working with Tyson on a sensational biopic of his life, the controversial former heavyweight champion has revealed.Tyson said: “Jamie Foxx and I will be working together. He will play me in the film about my life. We have already had several discussions about it.”

There will be no shortage of material for Foxx to work with.

After reigning as the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 until 1990 Tyson’s life went into freefall when he was sent to jail for rape in 1992.

After his 1995 release he continued to make headlines and caused outrage when he bit a chunk of rival Evander Holyfield’s ear off during a fight in 1992.

Tyson – who is currently fighting bankruptcy – admits he struggled to cope even during the peak of his success.

The 41-year-old sportsman said: “Even when I was training for a fight I would drink. This is the first time I have been clean and sober in my whole life.”

In 2005, Fox was received a Best Actor Oscar for his performance as legendary singer and pianist Ray Charles in ‘Ray’.
