Zhang Ziyi as Mulan, Jan de Bont to Direct

Jan de Bont (Speed director), will be in charge for the upcoming live-action version of Mulan, based on an original 6th century poem.

And, lovely Zhang Ziyi, that we all remember from titles like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, will be starring in the title role of Mulan. Sounds perfect?

Mulan is the story of the legendary heroine/soldier who joins an all-male army. We’re all familiar with the character from the Disney animated film of the same name that was released back in 1998.

As we said, the story dates back to the 6th century, although it has been set in a variety of different time periods. What can we expect from this new De Bont’s version?

We have no idea, but we know that John Blickstead is writing the screenplay for the new film production of the Chinese Joan of Arc story.

Check out five new “Mulan” movie posters.

“Mulan” is a famous Walt Disney animated feature film about the mythical Chinese woman warrior who pretends to be a male to replace his old father from the Emperor’s ruthless army conscription.

Mulan was first shown in June 1998 and earned $304 million box office figure worldwide ($121 million in US). Ming-Na provided the character voice while Lea Salonga of the Philippines provided the singing voice. The film out-grossed the two Disney films – Hunchback of Notre Dame and Hercules. Despite the negative reactions from the film critics and some feminist groups, this animated movie has still won recognition from Annie Awards and the theme song “Reflections” had some nominations from Golden Globe awards.

“Mulan” Movie In The Works

Mulan

A live-action feature version of “Mulan,” the legend of a heroic Chinese girl-warrior that Disney popularized in their 1998 animated movie, will be among the first films made by Xinhua Media Entertainment in partnership with the state-run China Film Group.

“China Film and Xinhua came in with significant funding to make this a co-production when we met them at Cannes in May. They liked that we were taking a Hollywood approach to a classic Chinese story,” Christopher Brough said.

Columbia Buys Linda Woolverton Spec

Linda WoolvertonScribe Linda Woolverton, known for her work on animated fare like “The Lion King,” has sold an untitled pitch to Sony’s Columbia, with Joe Roth and Team Todd on board to produce.The studio is keeping the story line under wraps, but it is known to be a live-action project. Elizabeth Cantillon and Devon Franklin are overseeing for the studio.

This is the second project Woolverton has sold with Roth and Team Todd’s Suzanne and Jennifer Todd producing. Disney last year picked up her prestrike pitch for a revisionist sequel to “Alice in Wonderland.” Tim Burton is in preproduction and set to direct the digital 3-D movie.

Woolverton’s credits include Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” and “Mulan,” as well Universal‘s “Curious George.” She is repped by CAA.
