Hungry For More Star Trek Details? Here You Go!

Here are the highlights:
- The budget on the film is far below $200MM.

- The film will be rated PG-13.

- The release date was pushed back to summer ‘09 because Paramount really wants it to be a summer blockbuster.

- The intent was to re-invent the Star Trek franchise, and that is why they went all the way back to start at the beginning.

- The script was written with Leonard Nimoy in mind. Nimoy read the script and liked it. It seems he’s so pivotal to the story that they would have had a big problem if he hadn’t liked it.

- Yes, the USS Enterprise will be assembled in space, although parts of it will be assembled on Earth.

- Orci revealed that originally Steven Spielberg read the script and talked to J.J. Abrams about directing it during a set visit to the Transformers set. Abrams mentioned it to his wife, who also helped talk him into the final decision to take on the potentially scary project. Read the rest of this entry

Jim Carrey20th Century Fox’s animated adaptation of Dr Seuss‘ beloved children’s book retained the top spot at the box office for a second weekend in North America, preliminary figures released Sunday showed. “Dr Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who” took in about 25.1 million dollars in U.S. and Canadian theaters this weekend, pushing its total ticket sales to about 86.5 million dollars over two weeks, according to Los Angeles-based box office tracking firm Media By Numbers.

Meanwhile, three new releases debuted in the number two, three and four spots respectively at the box office this week.

Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns” from Lions gate nailed the number two spot, as the family comedy about an inner city single mother struggling to keep her kids off the street sold a projected20 million dollars over the three-day period.

The 20th Century Fox thriller “Shutter” barely nudged out Paramount’s comedy “Drillbit Taylor” for the number three spot. The film opened with 10.7 million dollars, closely followed by “Drillbit” with 10.2 million dollars.

Rounding out the top 5 movies was last week’s No. 2 “10,000 BC.” The prehistoric adventure-action took in 8.7 million dollars this weekend and has grossed a total of 76.1 million dollars over three weeks in release. Read the rest of this entry

‘Tropic Thunder’ Red Band Teaser Trailer

Posted by Allan Ford 8 March, 2008 (0) Comment

After releasing a picture earlier this week that still makes us giggle, Paramount has now put a small teaser for Tropic Thunder online, which you can see below.

There’s very little footage in there, but this looks like great fun. It’s got lots of explosions, which, in the words of Michael Bay, is awesome. But the cast is fantastic and looks like they’re having the time of their lives playing actors who think they’re shooting a Vietnam movie but accidentally become involved in real combat when their exasperated director dumps them in the jungle. Nick Nolte with a bazooka would be enough to get us into the cinema, but Robert Downey Jr, in full un-PC make up, is the one that’s guaranteed our interest. With this and Iron Man coming up, we are currently man-crushing on him quite a lot.

Tom Cruise Spotted On The Set Of ‘Star Trek’!

Posted by Allan Ford 25 February, 2008 (0) Comment

Mission Impossible III, Tom Cruise

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams was visited on the set today by the star of his film Mission Impossible III, Tom Cruise.

JFXOnline who tell that Cruise was on the Star Trek set 22.02. in Los Angeles for a couple of hours. I have to ask myself, is that enough time for a cameo or just a friendly “Hello and here are some Scientology pamphlets”?

Rumors were swirling a few months back that Tom Cruise would have a small cameo role in Abrams’ re-imagined Star Trek. Sources, including one of Cruise’s representatives Arnold Robinson, denied the rumors and said, “That story is not true…here are some pamphlets.”

All kidding aside, they denied the rumors, but suffice it to say Cruise was in fact on the Trek set today. Could a Cruise cameo be the big surprise of the film? Or maybe we’re just blowing this out of proportion and he was just dropping by to visit a good friend.

Who knows, we do know that Paramount and Cruise weren’t exactly on speaking terms last time we checked. Oh well, I guess time will tell!

Star Trek hits theaters summer 2009.
