Paul Thomas Anderson‘s (There Will Be Blood) long gestating Scientology flick may be getting back Joaquin Phoenix into the moving pictures.
With Jeremy Renner now very busy in franchise world and UN that teams up with him in new film on Afghanistan, Variety reports that talks have started with Joaquin Phoenix to take on the part of Freddie Sutton, a former alcoholic who becomes the trainee to Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the alluring leader of the not so slightly hidden Scientology-esque cult.
Robert Downey Jr. in Paul Thomas Anderson’s Inherent Vice
We already had a little chat about the upcoming Paul Thomas Anderson adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel titled Inherent Vice, and I’m sure you all remember that Robert Downey Jr. was rumored to star in the whole thing as the lead – Larry ‘Doc’ Sportello.
It already sounds like this could be the perfect role for Downey Jr. (check out the description below if you don’t trust us) so no wonder we just learned that Downey is making plans to shoot Inherent Vice with Anderson this fall.
According to the latest reports, Anderson is supposedly halfway through a second draft on the project so a fall start date would give him 6 months to complete the script before filming.

The big news for today is that Megan Ellison, daughter of Oracle Corporation CEO Larry Ellison, is in negotiations to co-finance two new Paul Thomas Anderson films!
And that’s why you should be rich! So, the 25-year old billionaire heiress has offered to co-finance not only The Master, but also Anderson’s adaptation of Thomas Pynchon‘s Inherent Vice.
We already had a little chat about The Master, so you probably remember that the movie was set to star Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Jeremy Renner. But then we learned that Renner is actually quite busy man, so he had to drop out of the whole thing.
However, according to the latest reports, Philip Seymour Hoffman is still on board as a founder of a new religious organization in the 1950s. Hoffman would play “the Master,” a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Postponed Indefinitely
Ok, we have some bad news, and it goes like this:
The Master, a movie by Paul Thomas Anderson, (that we already wrote about), has been “postponed indefinitely”!
That’s exactly what Jeremy Renner, (one of the stars attached to this project) had to say about the movie, and added:
“I was really bummed about that. It really kind of stalled because when we were rehearsing – Phil, Paul and myself – we kept coming up against a wall that we couldn’t overcome. Or at least Paul couldn’t overcome.”
The film was set to follow “a charismatic intellectual who hatches a faith-based organization that begins to catch on in America in 1952.
The core is the relationship between the Master and Freddie, a twentysomething drifter who becomes the leader’s lieutenant. As the faith begins to gain a fervent following, Freddie finds himself questioning the belief system he has embraced, and his mentor.”
