José Padilha, Robocop 2

Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha told G1, “It’s closed,” regarding his deal to direct MGM’s Robocop reboot. And last week, Josh Zetumer came aboard to write the script for the film. This means, the project is still alive!

The Robocop remake has a bit of a problematic past, as Darren Aronofsky came on board to direct in 2008, but then MGM had to proclaim economic failure and Aronofsky left the project. With Zetumer recently being drafted to write the script, production on this pic is step out on the limb.

Zetumer currently has no produced screenplays. But his spy-thriller script Infiltrator made the Black List and is now in development at Warner Bros. with Leonardo DiCaprio to star. As well, Zetumer penned a draft of the expanding fourth installment of The Bourne Identity franchise.

Josh ZetumerAre you guys ready for huge update? I know you are, so we’re here to share some news on the upcoming Robocop remake!

Few days ago we reported that MGM plans to hire Brazilian director Jose Padilha to helm this remake, and now – it’s official! But if you thought that’s all – you were wrong, because we also learned that MGM has hired Josh Zetumer to script the remake.

So, who’s Josh Zetumer? He’s the guy who wrote Infiltrator, an action story that made it on the Hollywood’s Black List. But he’s definitely best known as the writer who worked on the drafts for Paramount’s Dune remake and fourth installment The Bourne Identity script.

Now, according to Deadline, Zetumer and Padilha are going to work together “closely in developing the film which will undoubtedly be under close scrutiny from the word “go” by people such as myself who believe the 1987 original to be a sci-fi classic.”

Jose Padilha

Robocop fans are going to be satisfied to hear that long-planned remake of 1987 movie is finally moving forward. Ok, maybe not with previously attached Darren Aronofsky, but still, guys from MGM have a decent replacement – Jose Padilha.

Brazilian director is probably best known from Elite Squad 2, a low-budget actioner that went on to make over $60m on home soil. So, he definitely looks like an interesting choice.

I’m sure you all remember MGM’s financial troubles, as well as Aronofsky’s interest in directing a remake. He actually planned to make movie that would’ve cost around $150m, but with all that studio problems, that was out of the question. Now, we learned that the budget of the new Robocop will be $80 million.

Robocop

MGM will step forward on its long expecting reboot of RoboCop, in the past had The Wolverine director Darren Aronofsky set attached to chair.

RoboCop was originally being fast tracked for a summer 2010 release date. At the end of last year season, Darren Aronofsky revealed that he was still interested in bringing the half-man, half-machine back to the mean streets of Detroit. But now that he is lined up to direct “The Wolverine” which will start shooting next year, it isn’t clear where the filmmaker stands. He might returns only as a producer on the project.

While chatting to The Playlist about Black Swan, the theme of RoboCop came up, and this is what L.A. leader for the best director category (according to tweetmeter) had to say:

Well, ‘RoboCop’ may still happen one day, who knows? It’s MGM and hopefully they’ll clear their stuff up and I’m still interested. David Self (“Road to Perdition”) wrote a great script…”

Mind-Blowing Review

blow your mind

I would like to show a mind-blowing point of view on films it might interest you as well. If your opinion on psychoanalysis is not the issue and you can’t get such perspective on movies, let’s just amuse yourself.

Due to above mentioned perspective almost every movie has some kind of subtext. And as a result, these half-coded messages turn up in movies you’d never expect.

Spider-ManPeter Parker‘s Man Juice

You think you’re watching superhero movie about a shy teenager named Peter Parker who discovers that a genetically engineered spider bite has given him superpowers. But this could easily be modified that Spider-Man really is all about semen, or puberty. We tend to find Spider-Man easier to identify with than other superheroes. He’s not an alien, like Superman, or the son of a major Norse god, like Thor. But that’s not all we have in common with Peter Parker: His superhero birth-trauma story is one with which we’re all painfully familiar — puberty.

It focused on a mortally wounded cop in a futuristic, crime-ridden Detroit who returns to fight corruption in the guise of a tough-talking cyborg. Sequels followed in 1990 and 1993, along with TV series and video games. RoboCop retains a sizable fan base online.

“After making the first ‘RoboCop’ at Orion more than 20 years ago, I’m thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self,” Medavoy said.

Darren Aronofsky to Direct RoboCop Remake?

By Allan Ford | Jul 9, 2008 | Movie News (0) Comment

Darren AronofskyAs is the way of the entertainment industry, there was one great film and iffy sequels in the Robocop franchise, and thus, it is due to be recycled. Not a problem, because Robocop is absolutely awesome. The 1987 original, however, was more than just a straight-up sci-fi action flick, but it had a strong satirical tone about the old ultra-violence and the decay of society. For example, the city of Detroit is essentially owned by a giant corporation called Omni Consumer Products, to the point where the mayor is largely ignored by both the conglomerate and the public, which views the CEO as their real figurehead.
