“Sex and the City” Dominates Weekend Box Office

“Sex and the City” has beat off competition from Indiana Jones to become the number one movie at the US box-office last weekend. The film, which stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, took a huge $55.7 million from 3,285 theaters across North America, to become the top opening R-rated comedy of all time, beating 1999’s American Pie.
“We’ve been waiting years for this,” says Patricia Ackerman, 42, who went with four girlfriends dressed more like they were headed to a premiere than a Saturday matinee. “This is our Indiana Jones.”
“Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull” was knocked into second place, dropping 54% of its take from its first weekend, a still respectable $46 million. The Steven Spielberg directed film has now taken a little over $216 million after just over a week of being on release.
Horror flick “The Strangers“, which stars Liv Tyler, opened at number three taking $20.7 million, its success following great word-of-mouth while “Iron Man” held on in at number four with another $14 million under it’s iron belt.
‘Sex and the City’ London Premiere

The “Sex and the City” stars lit up London’s Leicester Square for the world premiere of the cinematic sequel to their New York adventures, delighting fans with glamorous - and sometimes quirky - outfits that helped make the show an international hit.
Sarah Jessica Parker, who plays columnist Carrie Bradshaw, stole the show with her soaring Philip Treacy hat. She was joined by co-stars Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, known on screen as Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte. They were eager to gloss over the reported problems that delayed the film’s production - and chat instead of the boost the series has given their careers.
“Professionally it’s been the best 10 years of my life. I wouldn’t have wanted to have done it any differently with any different women or any different men,” Parker said. “So it’s been glorious.”
All were dressed in the designer clothes that made the series about sex and shopping such a huge fashion-industry hit. Parker’s hat, bearing flowers, grasses and a butterfly, was complemented by a pale green dress by Alexander McQueen - an outfit Carrie would have loved. Cattrall wore a red Vivienne Westwood dress and Nixon was in a floor length black pleated Calvin Klein gown. Davis wore a more modest vintage fuschia dress.
There had been some controversy over the decision to hold the premiere in London rather than New York, the city showcased so beautifully in the series. But Nixon said Monday’s premiere was just a build up to the main event in New York.
“We’re having a kind of smallish premiere here (and) we’re having a smallish premiere in Berlin. We’re building to the New York premiere which is enormous and happens just before the film opens worldwide,” she said.
The film opens May 30 in the United States.
Mike Myers Revealed As MTV Movie Awards Host
Mike Myers will host the MTV Movie Awards on June 1.
The ‘Shrek’ star is looking forward to taking charge of the Los Angeles ceremony - which distributes awards including Best Screen Kiss and Best Villain - because he thinks it will be a fun event.
He said: “Hosting the MTV Movie Awards is like a party, but without having to do beer runs in your mom’s mini van. We do beer runs in Will Smith’s four-storey motor home.”
This will not be the first time the 45-year-old actor has hosted the awards.
In 1997, he presided over the ceremony where winners included Tom Cruise and Claire Danes.
Previous hosts of the awards include Will Smith, Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Alba and Sarah Jessica Parker.
Last year’s host, comedian Sarah Silverman, caused controversy when she made jokes about troubled 26-year-old singer Britney Spears.
She said: “Britney Spears is amazing. She is in her twenties and she has already accomplished everything she’s going to accomplish in her life. It’s mind blowing!
“And have you seen Britney’s kids? Oh my god, they are the most adorable mistakes you will ever see! They are as cute as the hairless vagina they came out of.”
Nominations for the awards, which will be held in Universal City, California, will be announced next month.
‘Sex And The City’ movie will ’shock’ fans
Sarah Jessica Parker has predicted that Sex And The City fans will be surprised by the upcoming movie.
The actress, who plays writer Carrie Bradshaw, said the big-screen adaptation is more serious and complex than the hit TV show.
She said: “A handful of people have seen it and have been very surprised by the seriousness. There’s something that happens in this movie and it’s really about realising your own complicity and disappointment.
“You know the necessity of friends, but at a certain point, as a grown-up person, you have to take care of yourself.”
She added: “There’s still plenty of ripe old salty dirty stuff. But I think it’s a really smart story and I think Michael Patrick wrote a beautiful screenplay.”
She also hinted that the movie may premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, saying: “I think we are all still figuring out what we want in terms of the movie. You know, whether it’s at Cannes two weeks before it opens domestically.”
The film is scheduled for release on May 30.
