Sean Penn, Jim Carrey and Benecio Del Toro Are The Three Stooges
MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for “The Three Stooges.”
According to Variety, Sean Penn has signed on to play Larry in The Three Stooges remake. The studio is also entering negotiations with Jim Carrey to portray Curly and Benecio del Toro to play Moe.
It was said that Carrey is already prepping for the role and planning to gain 40 pounds to portray Jerome “Curly” Howard. The Farrelly Brothers are directing and the film was said not to be a biopic of the trio, but rather a comedy revolving around the zany antics that Howard, Larry Fine and Moe Howard displayed in the classic short films of the 30s and 40s.
The project was originally set up at Columbia, which produced the 1930s Stooges shorts. C3 Entertainment Inc., which holds the licensing rights to the Stooges brand, then sold the feature rights to Warner Bros. in 2001 for the Farrellys to write and produce the movie. Eventually, Warner Bros. let the rights lapse and MGM’s Mary Parent scooped them up along with the Farrellys’ continuing participation.
Peter and Bobby Farrelly wrote the script, which Bobby has referenced as Dumb, Dumber & Dumbest, and will produce with Bradley Thomas and Charlie Wessler. The Stooges maintain remarkably global brand recognition, and their shorts, films and cartoons are still broadcast in 30 countries.
The studio is looking to start production in the fall for a 2010 release slot.

‘What Just Happened?’ – 2 Clips – Cannes 2008
“What Just Happened?”, Barry Levinson’s tale of an embattled Hollywood producer, will be the
Cannes Film Festival’s closing night attraction.

The movie, written by Art Linson and based on his memoir about his experiences as a producer, stars Robert De Niro as Ben, whose professional and personal life comes undone during one turbulent week.
In What Just Happened?, De Niro plays a quality producer in crisis mode, handling temperamental co-workers (including Bruce Willis as himself) and demanding higher-ups (including Catherine Keener as a studio boss) while struggling to make sense of his personal life. Robin Wright Penn plays his most recent ex-wife, Sean Penn plays the star of a movie-within-the-movie.
The idea that the movie is too “inside” amuses Levinson.
The film generated strong buzz coming in to January’s Sundance Film Festival but the movie received a mixed critical response and failed to catch fire with distributors, and its rights remain available.
“What I’ve heard is that some studio people view it as a personal attack: You can make fun of writers, directors, actors, but not them.” Levinson said.

Steven Soderbergh, who took the top Cannes award in 1989 for “Sex, Lies and Videotape“, won a race against time to complete his four-hour epic “Che“, on the life of the revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara in time for the festival.
Steven Soderbergh’s inclusion looks like a last-minute decision. He competes with two pic ”Che” bio – “The Argentine” and “Guerrilla”
As predicted, Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” world preems down on the Croisette, possibly on Sunday May 18. It promises this fest’s must-attend, highest-glam event.
Thierry Fremaux, the festival’s head said the presence of Steven Spielberg and the stars of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which will premiere outside the main competition, would ensure “a magnificent red carpet”.
Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and George Lucas are expected to join Spielberg on the steps outside the Palais des Festivals, guaranteeing the kinds of flashing cameras that add essential glamour to the festival’s arthouse fare.
Out-of-competition, DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda,” an adventure, comedic chop-soc tooner, promises another Hollywood red-carpet cavalcade.
Also non-competing, as is Woody Allen’s custom, is the Spain-shot “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.”
After its debut at the Sundance Film Festival, the Hollywood satire “What Just Happened?” will get a second chance at Cannes – closing night, but we are not sure yet because organizers said they would announce the movies that open and close the festival in a few days.
Robert De Niro stars an embattled Hollywood producer whose life falls apart during one turbulent week. In a life-imitating-art turn, the film’s climactic scene takes place at the Cannes Film Festival, with the producer’s fictional movie-within-a-movie opening the event.
“What Just Happened?” also stars Catherine Keener as a tough-as-nails studio chief and features a number of stars, including Sean Penn and Bruce Willis, playing themselves in self-parodying roles. Barry Levinson directs from an adaptation of “Into the Wild” producer Art Linson’s memoir.
The film generated strong buzz going into January’s Sundance Film Festival, and was expected to sell for a significant seven-figure sum. But the movie received a mixed critical.
