What Just Happened?”, Barry Levinson’s tale of an embattled Hollywood producer, will be the Cannes Film Festival‘s closing night attraction.

Robert De Niro

The movie, written by Art Linson and based on his memoir about his experiences as a producer, stars Robert De Niro as Ben, whose professional and personal life comes undone during one turbulent week.

In What Just Happened?, De Niro plays a quality producer in crisis mode, handling temperamental co-workers (including Bruce Willis as himself) and demanding higher-ups (including Catherine Keener as a studio boss) while struggling to make sense of his personal life. Robin Wright Penn plays his most recent ex-wife, Sean Penn plays the star of a movie-within-the-movie.

Steven Soderbergh, who took the top Cannes award in 1989 for “Sex, Lies and Videotape“, won a race against time to complete his four-hour epic “Che“, on the life of the revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara in time for the festival.

As predicted, Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” world preems down on the Croisette, possibly on Sunday May 18. It promises this fest’s must-attend, highest-glam event.

Thierry Fremaux, the festival’s head said the presence of Steven Spielberg and the stars of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which will premiere outside the main competition, would ensure “a magnificent red carpet”.

Harrison Ford, Cate Blanchett and George Lucas are expected to join Spielberg on the steps outside the Palais des Festivals, guaranteeing the kinds of flashing cameras that add essential glamour to the festival’s arthouse fare.

Jessica Chastain to star opposite Brad Pitt in ‘Tree of Life’

Jessica ChastainJessica Chastain will play the female lead opposite Brad Pitt in ‘Tree of Life‘, a film that story concerns the loss of innocence as seen through the eyes of the son of the characters portrayed by Pitt and Chastain.

Sean Penn appears in a supporting role.

Heath Ledger was originally slated to star in the film, but Pitt replaced him prior to the late actor’s death.

Jessica Chastain will next be seen in the Al Pacino starrer ‘Salomaybe?’.

Brad Pitt Lead Role In ‘Tree of Life’

Brad PittThere’s been no official announcement as yet, but it’s been reported that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been sighted in Smithville, Texas where Terrence Malick may be setting up for a location shoot.

Heath Ledger had been previously linked to the lead role.

According to previous reports, Sean Penn is attached to star in ‘Tree of Life’ as well.

The story, which the elusive filmmaker has apparently been quietly crafting for decades, has been called a ‘complex drama’.

In the summer of 1978, Malick had begun work on this film, which was his most ambitious project. It was called ‘Q’ at the time, but now it has returned with the title ‘Tree of Life’.

‘Into the Wild’ leads Critics’ Choice nominations

Movie director Sean Penn poses with actor Emile Hirsh Sean Penn’s adventure tale “Into the Wild” garnered the most Critics’ Choice award nominations on Tuesday, including best picture, best actor for Emile Hirsch and best director for Penn.

With seven nominations, “Into the Wild,” directed by Penn, edged out “Juno,” the offbeat comedy about a pregnant teenager played by Ellen Page that received six nods, including best picture and best actress for Page.

Five films snagged five nominations apiece: “Atonement,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Sweeney Todd” and “Hairspray.”

Joining “Into the Wild” and “Juno” with best picture nods were: “American Gangster,” “Atonement,” “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” “The Kite Runner,” “Michael Clayton,” “No Country for Old Men,” “Sweeney Todd,” and “There Will Be Blood.”

Besides Hirsch, best actor nominations went to George Clooney for “Michael Clayton,” Daniel Day-Lewis for “There Will Be Blood,” Johnny Depp for “Sweeney Todd,” Ryan Gosling for “Lars and the Real Girl,” and Viggo Mortensen for “Eastern Promises.”

Along with Page, others getting best actress nods were Amy Adams for “Enchanted,” Cate Blanchett for “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” Julie Christie for “Away From Her,” Marion Cotillard for “La Vie en Rose,” and Angelina Jolie for “A Mighty Heart.”
