Here are the highlights:
- The budget on the film is far below $200MM.

- The film will be rated PG-13.

- The release date was pushed back to summer ‘09 because Paramount really wants it to be a summer blockbuster.

- The intent was to re-invent the Star Trek franchise, and that is why they went all the way back to start at the beginning.

- The script was written with Leonard Nimoy in mind. Nimoy read the script and liked it. It seems he’s so pivotal to the story that they would have had a big problem if he hadn’t liked it.

- Yes, the USS Enterprise will be assembled in space, although parts of it will be assembled on Earth.

- Orci revealed that originally Steven Spielberg read the script and talked to J.J. Abrams about directing it during a set visit to the Transformers set. Abrams mentioned it to his wife, who also helped talk him into the final decision to take on the potentially scary project. Read the rest of this entry

Chris Pine Based Captain Kirk On Han Solo!

Posted by Allan Ford 12 March, 2008 (0) Comment

In an exclusive chat to IGN, Chris Pine has revealed that Harrison Ford was an inspiration during the Star Trek shoot.

I’ve always loved that quality about him in Star Wars, this sense of absolute grumpy manner; the accidental hero. Not to say that I modeled my version of James T Kirk on anything in particular but I think I definitely have wanted to bring that kind of Harrison Ford humour to Kirk.

Call us Trek geeks, but don’t you think he already had a pretty decent person to base his character on, without having to look to other Star franchises - like, say, Shatner?

Tom Cruise Spotted On The Set Of ‘Star Trek’!

Mission Impossible III, Tom Cruise

Star Trek director J.J. Abrams was visited on the set today by the star of his film Mission Impossible III, Tom Cruise.

JFXOnline who tell that Cruise was on the Star Trek set 22.02. in Los Angeles for a couple of hours. I have to ask myself, is that enough time for a cameo or just a friendly “Hello and here are some Scientology pamphlets”?

Rumors were swirling a few months back that Tom Cruise would have a small cameo role in Abrams’ re-imagined Star Trek. Sources, including one of Cruise’s representatives Arnold Robinson, denied the rumors and said, “That story is not true…here are some pamphlets.”

All kidding aside, they denied the rumors, but suffice it to say Cruise was in fact on the Trek set today. Could a Cruise cameo be the big surprise of the film? Or maybe we’re just blowing this out of proportion and he was just dropping by to visit a good friend.

Who knows, we do know that Paramount and Cruise weren’t exactly on speaking terms last time we checked. Oh well, I guess time will tell!

‘Star Trek’ Release Date Pushed Back to 2009

Posted by Allan Ford 14 February, 2008 (0) Comment

‘Star Trek’ Release Date Pushed Back to 2009Bad news came from the much anticipated sci-fi “Star Trek” as it was said that the fans have to wait longer to watch the J.J. Abrams’ movie. Reports claimed that the release date of the sci-fi adventure film has been pushed back from December 25 to May 8, 2009 by Paramount Pictures.

Variety reported that Paramount reasoned that the move was part of a major reshuffle in the Paramount and DreamWorks’ release date schedule. The studio further claimed that the shuffling of the date was made because the film is potentially will gross higher if set for summer release. By releasing it on May 8, “Trek” has yet to have strong competitors. But, the film will be opened a week after and before the release of action fantasy “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and drama thriller “Angels & Demons” respectively.

On the bad news, Slash Film took the positive insight. The movie site reported that the change on the schedule can possibly be a good thing as J.J. Abrams and his crew have more time to do a couple re-shoots, to make some changes on the script and to work on the computer generated effects. The site noted that the director/producer has been frustrated on the set because he was unable to rewrite the script on spot due to his contract with the WGA.

New Star Trek Movie Plot Details

Posted by Allan Ford 2 February, 2008 (0) Comment

Some significant plot information regarding the new Star Trek movie has come our way. If you read Screen Rant regularly, you’ll recall that back in October they stated that there would be Klingons in the new film. This was supposedly debunked by other sites, but lo and behold, a few days ago a slip of the lip by Anton Yelchin who plays Chekov in the Star Trek 11 apparently confirmed that Klingons will indeed appear in the film.

Well now S.R. come across some new information about the plot regarding the USS Enterprise, the timeline aspect of the film, and a whopper of a plot spoiler that’s so huge that I have decided not to reveal it.

Before I go on I want to say that I know we’re all hungry for information on Star Trek (as well as other sci-fi and fantasy movies), but I think that sometimes we can tend to get carried away and end up taking away some of the joy of seeing a movie for the first time by knowing too much about it when we finally sit down to watch it….

Shatner’s gone there before, but new ‘Trek’ isn’t on frontier

Posted by Allan Ford 23 January, 2008 (0) Comment

William ShatnerSince hearing the news of a Star Trek prequel movie, fans have been asking if William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk in the original TV series as well as in seven motion pictures, would somehow be involved in the J.J. Abrams movie. Then it was announced that Star Trek XI would have Leonard Nimoy reprising his role as Mr. Spock, yet still no go on Shatner, who has repeatedly stated that he would gladly join the cast.

USA Today caught up with Abrams and asked him why Shatner wasn’t asked to be in his film. He replied, “The only reason Mr. Shatner is not in the movie and Mr. Nimoy is, is that his character died on screen.” (In the accompanying video interview, Abrams said he couldn’t find a way to put Shatner in that didn’t seem like he was doing it because he’s a huge fan of Shatner.)

This is really an unacceptable excuse. Yes, Kirk was killed off in the seventh Trek film, Generations, but I don’t know ANY Star Trek fan who accepts that death as true and absolute, even though it happened in a film that’s considered canon. It was a lame death and certainly not believable. Also, it happened during a major time-travel sequence, so there’s really room there to turn the story around. Nobody bought Kirk’s death then, and no one buys it now either.
