The Hangover Review

The Hangover” is a worthy entrant into the “guy movie” hall of fame. It’s got laughs, drugs, tomfoolery, bodily harm, strippers, and a Mike Tyson cameo. If you were going down the list of things needed for a comedy to take flight you’d find them all here; the three main players pass the ball, the chemistry works, and the film never devolves into that most debilitating trope of the romantic comedy – a serious third act. If you’re a fellow, or the person who monitors your fellow’s entertainment intake I highly recommend giving this a watch. It’s nicely done.

The Hangover image

Essentially, The Hangover follows three amnesiac groomsman the day after a debaucherous bachelor party as they track down the origins of a series of clues that they hope lead them to the lost groom, Doug (Justin Bartha). Phil (Bradley Cooper) is a schoolteacher who resents the family life that has stripped him of the wild antics he enjoyed as a youth. He needs this party bad, and forces the gang to go to excess, an act that only bites them in the ass later. Stu (Ed Helms), Phil’s cautious foil, is extremely pussy-whipped by a girlfriend that no self-respecting man would put up with for no longer than one roll in the hay. He’s the conscience in the film that only seems to get trampled on and distorted. Doug’s future brother-in-law, Alan (Zach Galifianakis), is the odd duck. Phil and Stu aren’t really his friends, but he’s so desperate for male camaraderie that he’d follow these guys anywhere, as long as he gets to carry his male-purse that he refers to as a satchel – like the one Indiana Jones carries…read more [Screen Junkies]

The Hangover falls victim to having it’s best laughs in the trailer, something most comedies walk right into. Todd Phillips’ new film also lets a few gags run on too long and it features subplots that are unnecessary. Yet with all of this, it’s hard not to laugh at it when it hits the right notes with jokes or be swept up in the command Bradley Cooper has as the lead. Unlike the recent What Happens in Vegas, The Hangover has the ingredients needed to make a good and often hilarious comedy and actually takes place in Vegas for longer than five minutes. Dare I say, The Hangover is the best Vegas comedy and certainly is the best comedy of the year…read more [atomic popcorn]

The Hangover Interview

Posted by Fiona 27 May, 2009 (0) Comment

The Hangover” is a comedy about a bachelor party in Las Vegas that loses the groom. The morning after their night of debauchery, they have to reconstruct their party to locate their missing friend…

The Hangover Rule 1

Our friends over at ScreenJunkies have 10 rules how to survive “The Hangover”. Actually that’s an interview with stars of the movie Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Heather Graham and with director Todd Phillips.

Ed Helms: “I guess my character, Stu, is kind of a nervous nelly, rule follower of the group.
I can’t imagine why Todd [Phillips] thought I would be right for that part other than the fact that I’ve known Todd for sometime and I’m kind of a nervous nelly rule follower person in real life. So maybe that had something to do with it.”

Zach Galifianakis: “I play a character, Alan, who’s a well intentioned moron who is kind of trapped in adolescence. He wants friends but can’t get any really, can’t get adult friends.  I didn’t think that I could play it. The reason, it’s easy to play. When a role seems fun it’s easy to play. It kind of comes organically.”

Bradley Cooper: I play Phil who’s an English school teacher for boys and he’s a father. He’s kind of the guy whose bark is a lot bigger than his bite. He talks a big game, going to Vegas and that he’s going to get crazy and he loves sort of reliving whatever it is that he doesn’t live in his home life. It’s like a lot of fathers who talk a big game, but really they love their family and they’re actually good guys. He’s sort of the problem solver. There’s nothing that he can’t solve and tries to hold it together even when there’s nothing to hold together. I just sort of trusted Todd [Phillips] because I was like, ‘I don’t know if I can pull this off.’ But then about two weeks into it I started to get comfortable and I realized that I was figuring it out. But I’m glad that he thought I should do it because I probably wouldn’t have thought that I could do it.”

The Hangover Gets Sequel

Posted by Fiona 6 April, 2009 (0) Comment

Two months before the Todd Phillips-directed “The Hangover” even arrives in theaters, Warner Bros has made a deal to proceed with the sequel. Both Phillips and Scot Armstrong will be writing the new film.

The Hangover

While studios often wait to see box office results before committing to a sequel, the studio has made this “multimillion-dollar commitment” based on early test screening results and the reaction to the newest trailer at ShoWest.

Todd Phillips will be back to direct and produce “The Hangover” sequel through his Green Hat Films banner. WB also has made deals to reunite Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms, who star in the original. The studio hopes to begin production late this year.

“The Hangover” is due out in theaters on June 5th, 2009.
