Oscar 2011 Short Preview – What Movie Must Have to Deserve an Oscar?
Ok, we all know (or, at least I hope we know) that the upcoming Oscar night will not open our eyes and show us what movie deserves our attention. That award, unfortunately, doesn’t mean that the movie is the best one, or even the really good one. But I also know that tomorrow, we’ll be watching that spectacle, and hoping that our favorite movie wins. So, let’s start our little “fight” and try to answer some questions.
I’m sure I’ll never forget The Hurt Locker that took almost everything in every single category at the last year’s Oscar. If anybody cares about my opinion – Wikileaks‘ Iraq “movie” that represents the insanity of human beings and their victims, deserved Oscar more than Bigelow’s.
And I know that some out there don’t share my opinion. And it’s totally ok. But, why should we mix movies with politics now? Well, that’s exactly the thing – it’s not us! It’s Oscar that started the whole thing!
I mean, how is it possible that a movie like Avatar, made for enjoyment, lost this race? Now, please, don’t give me that “weak script” answer, and read between the lines for change…
So, let me ask you once again – what is it, that one movie must have to deserve an Oscar? Artistic impression? Art of the moment? Good and original story? Famous cast? Political background? Can anybody even answer that question?
This year we have almost identical situation. The Hurt Locker last year. The King’s Speech this year. Yes, I do know that these are completely different movies, and when I say completely – I mean, nothing in common, but that still leads us to the above mentioned question.
The Academy obviously doesn’t like blockbusters, they like to nominate a movie that will train our artificial intelligence (no, I’m not talking about Spielberg’s movie), and it sounds logical. And, if you take a little look at this year’s list of nominations, you already see that each one of 10 nominated movies really has the art moment – but how can we measure that and say – look, here’s the best one!?
For example, I think that Black Swan has it all! No, not just because we have ballet in the movie, because, let’s face it – the ballet here has almost a side effect. Then, we have 127 Hours, Inception, True Grit and of course The King’s Speech.
The Most Pirated Movies of 2010
So, guys, 2010 is almost over, and what a movie-year it has been!
Let’s check some titles right here, at the beginning: Avatar, Kick-Ass, Inception, The Hurt Locker, Clash of the Titans…
Ok, you already smell that some numbers are coming in our little story, so let’s get straight to the point.
We’re here to share some interesting announcement that just came from TorrentFreak, and that’s the full list of the 10 most pirated films of 2010 and, of course, number of downloads:
James Cameron on The Hurt Locker in 3D
It’s just something about that highest-grossing filmmaker of all time. Yes, James Cameron… so annoying but so sincere at the same time.
Especially when he decides to share his opinion about his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow and her Oscar-winning movie The Hurt Locker.
It’s an short interview, but if you still think that this “sincere” thing from the beginning of our report is sarcastic or something like that, then you should definitely check this (part of it) out first…
“It was David and Goliath. Goliath had made more than a couple of billion dollars and ‘The Hurt Locker’ had made about what it cost to shoot, about $15 million.
The Academy always likes to be the great equalizer. But I don’t begrudge her any of that. I couldn’t think of a better outcome for our lives. I got my Oscar. She got her Oscar.”
The Hurt Locker Producer Sues 5000 BitTorrenters!
Voltage Pictures, producers behind The Hurt Locker, filed a lawsuit against illegal fire sharers (such as by BitTorrent) of the movie through the Internet.
The film won six Oscars, including Best Picture, but earned only $17 million at the US box office, making it one of the least commercially successful winners of the top prize in the modern era.
Voltage Pictures is seeking $1,500 from each defendant in order to settle the suit, making it one of the biggest lawsuits against individuals in history. The suit warns people named that a failure to settle will result in the case being taken to court, where the plaintiffs will seek 10 times that amount. An official list of offenders has not been given to Voltage Pictures, but they do have the IP addresses of the accused.
The Hurt Locker Review
The Hurt Locker is easily the best of the movies which have focused on the ongoing war.
Skillfully directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Locker is both a psychological portrait and an exciting action film. It captures the complexities of the war in Iraq with visceral suspense as well as explosive battle sequences and powerful performances.
By taking a close look at a trio of courageous but also very human soldiers, it brings the conflict to life in a way that no previous movie has managed to do…read more [USA Today]
What a shame that the one movie about the Iraq war that has a chance of being viewed by a large worldwide audience should be so disappointing. According to press reports, members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences finally found a movie about the Iraq war they liked because it is “apolitical.” Actually, “The Hurt Locker” is just the opposite; it’s an endorsement of the politically chauvinistic view that the world is a stage upon which Americans get to deal with their demons no matter the consequence for others…read more [TruthDig]
Why Avatar Didn’t Win the Oscar?
When Katherine Bigelow‘s The Hurt Locker won for “Best Picture,” many believed that James Cameron‘s Avatar had been robbed. Speculation focused on Oscar politics and the directors’ ill-fated marriage. But noted psychologist Dr. Jeffrey Fine says the reason is simpler: Avatar didn’t win because the Academy missed the movie’s deeper meaning and chose a “real life” film instead.
Those who’ve argued that Avatar mimics Dances With Wolves or Pocahontas prove Dr. Fine’s point.
“The message in Avatar is not a simplistic return to nature or to a previous evolutionary stage,” he argues, adding, “It may be the next leap in the evolution of consciousness, and the only one that may hold the promise of survival.”
Pointing to the greed and cynicism that not only mark much of American culture but have hardened American hearts, he says that unless we wake up to Avatar’s message, humanity will be lost.
Oscar 2010 Winners!
Oscar winners 2010 list is here.
We already wrote about possible winners and competition between- James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow, so we can say that we’re not at all surprised that this was Kathryn Bigelow‘s night.
The Hurt Locker won 6 Oscars, including honour for Best Movie and Best Director.
So, Bigelow became the first woman to win an Oscar for Best Director.
On the other hand, the movie that still sits on the top of box office, James Cameron‘s Avatar definetely had a bad luck. The movie won only 3 golden statues in technical categories – Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
James Cameron vs. Kathryn Bigelow
He could go home with another one. She, on the other hand, could become the first woman to take home that prize. Yes, you’re all guessing what we’re wondering about! One the Oscar day we’re talking about this big competition of former life couple, Kathryn Bigelow and well-known director James Cameron.
We must say that it’s Cameron who provoked us all to write about this, since you all had a chance to hear his question that referred to her possible win:
“Did Katherine Bigelow win the Oscar for Best Director because she was the best, or because she was a woman?
