Legion Review

Legion

Legion” begins in Los Angeles, where the angel Michael (Paul Bettany) literally falls from the sky and brings destruction with him. As the city falls into darkness (again: literally), he hits the road in search of Charlie (Adrienne Palicki), who, despite being an eight-months-pregnant non-virgin, is still the prophesied mother of humanity’s savior. The tiny desert diner where Charlie waitresses for owner Bob (Dennis Quaid) and his son Jeep (Lucas Black) serves as ground zero for the battle against agents of God in the form of “weak” possessed humans who function much like classic Romero zombies. With the diner surrounded and the patrons inside turning against one another, it’s up to Jeep and Michael to keep Charlie safe long enough for the second coming of Jesus to take his first baby breath…read more [FEARNet]

Sadly, the much-needed depth brought to the characters in this simple story by the quality cast and the quieter dramatic moments isn’t going to do much for anyone sold on the movie merely expecting lots of creatures and action. As much as “Legion” looks great, filled with all sorts of interesting visual ideas, not all of them fully work – the possessed humans themselves are kind of lame, which doesn’t help matters since for many, they’re the biggest selling point…read more [ComingSoon]

UPDATE 8/12/2009/ Watch a red band trailer and Hi – Res images from the “Legion

The “Legion” panel was part of Sony’s presence at Comic-Con ‘09 and the film brought out stars Paul Bettany, Doug Jones, Tyrese Gibson, and Adrianne Palicki, along with writer/director Scott Stewart.

Legion

So, the first official poster for the upcoming horror/action movie featuring Paul Bettany as the Archangel Michael holding a knife and a machinegun – armed and angelic, has been unveiled. Stewart had a great way to describe the movie: “Angels with machineguns.” Take a look at the poster below.

After a terrifying biblical apocalypse descends upon the world, the Archangel Michael is the only one standing between mankind and an apocalypse, after God loses faith in humanity. Michael, along with some humans in a diner in the middle of nowhere, has to protect the messiah growing inside one of the diner’s waitress.

Scott Stewart, a former special effects man, brought along an extended trailer for the movie, the first ever footage of “Legion” anywhere.

…We see Paul Bettany’s Archangel Michael in silhouette, his wings furled behind his back. Cut to Michael in the rain, screaming as he cuts off his wings with a knife. Blood pools in the rain and a runed silver collar falls to the floor. As he leaves he’s confronted by a pair of cops who try to stop him. Bad ass angel that he is, he takes them out with barrels blazing. Afterwards one of the officers is still standing, his eyes turn black and his teeth sharpen. It’s another angel who threatens Michael, “you can’t protect the child.” it says.

…Inside the diner, a heavily pregnant waitress serves coffee while Dennis Quaid stands by the counter. As the waitress pours for an elderly lady she’s asked when her baby’s due. Soon, she says. “That’s too bad, your fucking baby’s going to burn!”

Transformers 2 Reviews

Transformers 2

Everything from the girls to the action in “Transformers 2” is designed for cheap thrills. Bay aims for every low-brow joke in the book. Racial stereotyping, bad sex jokes, and “hilarious” humping scenes are just a few of the gems he’s able to come up with. These cheap jokes actually went over well with the audience in my screening, but when a movie has three humping scenes and none of them involve an actual human doing the humping there’s something wrong with that…read more [Blogcritics]

This is all standard negative criticism for Bay movies, however. The question you’re all wondering has yet to be fully addressed: Are the action scenes good? My answer is that yeah, they’re pretty sweet. Bay manages to drop the pretense that he was trying to make a film with plot, and just let giant robots fight near or on pyramids. A special note should be made of their IMAX cinematography. The scale of the Transformers and the picture quality really do add a lot of enjoyment to some scenes, notably the ones where Devastator is involved. The acting even manages to improve a bit from bad comic acting to legitimate moments of care and concern for the characters. There’s not much else to say about this; the action is cool, but trying to describe why it’s cool is kind of a futile pursuit… read more [ScreenJunkies]

The film should really be called “Transformers: Bigger, Longer, Unintelligent.”

In case you missed the first movie and since both films are nearly the same in execution that isn’t really necessary the good robots, called Autobots led by Optimus Prime (voice of Peter Cullen), fight the bad robots, called Decepticons led by Megatron (voice of Hugo Weaving). A human named Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) gets thrown into the battle as the unlikely savior accompanied by a sexy love interest, Mikaela (Megan Fox). Sam’s parents, Ron (Kevin Dunn) and Judy (Julie White), provide comic relief as does John Turturro as Agent Simmons…read more [MetroWest]
