Voltron: Defender of the Universe: Max Makowski

Last week we reported that Relativity had scooped up the gestating the Japanese television series adaptation film Voltron: Defender of the Universe from 20th Century Fox with plans to make it with a more moderate budget (ala 300).” Latino Review report tonight that Max Makowski (Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), a general unknown, is set to direct the nostalgic robot actioner.

Makowsi is currently attached to direct the revamp of Kung Fu, due in 2009, and he’s best known for the 2005 Sundance assassins flick, “One Last Dance“, co-starring Harvey Keitel. Other films he’s attached to, in a writing or directing capacity, include Shinobi and Hawaii Five-O.

“Voltron: Defender of the Universe” will tell a post-apocalyptic tale about five people surviving an alien attack in New York City and Mexico. Those five end up to be pilots of lion-like vehicles which can be combined to form a massive sword-wielding Voltron in order to battle Earth’s invaders.

Twentieth Century Fox has dropped its robot action movie Voltron: Defender Of The Universe, reports Variety but that doesn’t necessarily mean the project is dead.

Mark Gordon (The Day After Tomorrow) and Jordan Wynn are still producers for the adaptation of the 1980’s Japanese anime while Bryan Zuriff is still executive producing. A director is likely to be announced shortly to lead the film, based on Justin Marks’ screenplay. Read the rest of this entry
