Bae Doona to Join Cloud Atlas

Bae DoonaLet’s continue our previous chat about the upcoming adaptation of the David Mitchell novel Cloud Atlas, ok?

Of course, we’re here for the casting update, because we’ve just learned that South Korean actress Bae Doona, lady best known from Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, will join the previously announced Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Ben Whishaw, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Jim Broadbent.

Cloud Atlas is “the story presents six narratives that evoke an array of genres, from Melvillean high-seas drama to California noir and dystopian fantasy.

There is a naive clerk on a nineteenth-century Polynesian voyage: and aspiring composer who insinuates himself to the home of a syphilitic genius: a journalist investigating a nuclear plant: a publisher with a dangerous best-seller on his hands: and a cloned human being created for slave labour.

These five stories are bisected and arranged around a sixth, the oral history of a post-apocalyptic island, which forms the heart of the story.”

Tom Tykwer and the Wachowskis Direct Cloud Atlas

Tom Tykwer, the German director best known for his Run Lola Run is set to direct Cloud Atlas along with the Wachowski brothers.

That’s the latest news that comes straight from lovely Natalie Portman, who confirmed that it will be “a group effort.”

You already remember our previous reports about Cloud Atlas, movie that has been in development for a while now with Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, James McAvoy and Halle Berry attached.

“I don’t know what’s going on with financing,” Portman told EW in an interview that’s not online yet.

“I read it while doing [The Wachowski produced] ‘V for Vendetta’ and I gave it to the Wachowskis and to Tom Tykwer (he shot a “Paris Je Taime” short with her around the same time).

Now they’re directing it together, the three of them. I will have some acting role in it if it happens, but probably nothing major.”

Raizo (Rain) is one of the world’s deadliest assassins, having been kidnapped as a child and raised by the Ozunu Clan, believed by the world to be a myth. When Raizo’s friend is executed by the clan, Raizo flees into hiding. He later reemerges, seeking revenge.

Director Brett Ratner is off the upcoming Conan remake. Joe Gatta, the producer behind the upcoming planned reboot of the “Conan the Barbarian” franchise, tells Empire Magazine that Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour,” “X-Men: The Last Stand”) is no longer attached to the project.

“We’re currently in the process of hiring a director.” For the past six months we were discussing the movie with Brett Ratner, and for more timing issues than anything else we had to part ways with Brett. We all wanted him to do it, believe me; just the timing didn’t work. But you never know what can happen.”

The first poster for “Ninja Assassin” popped up thanks to ScreenWeek featuring a shot of Rain.

Synopsis: Raizo (Rain) is one of the deadliest assassins in the world. Taken from the streets as a child, he was transformed into a trained killer by the Ozunu Clan, a secret society whose very existence is considered a myth. But haunted by the merciless execution of his friend by the Clan, Raizo breaks free from them…and vanishes. Now he waits, preparing to exact his revenge. In Berlin, Europol agent Mika Coretti (Naomie Harris) has stumbled upon a money trail linking several political murders to an underground network of untraceable assassins from the Far East. Defying the orders of her superior, Ryan Maslow (Ben Miles), Mika digs into top secret agency files to learn the truth behind the murders. Her investigation makes her a target, and the Ozunu Clan sends a team of killers, led by the lethal Takeshi (Rick Yune), to silence her forever. The team behind “V for Vendetta” are back in action and one has to wonder if the Wachowski brothers will have better luck as producers this time around than they did as directors for “Speed Racer“, the lowest cash producing film of May. Warner Bros. has sent out a press release stating that director James McTeigue is once again behind the camera as their martial arts extravaganza “Ninja Assassin” officially begins production in Berlin.

“Ninja Assassin” stars Korean pop star Rain (Speed Racer) as the central character, Raizo; Naomie Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End) as Europol researcher Mika Coretti; Ben Miles (V For Vendetta) as Europol Agent Ryan Maslow; legendary martial arts performer Sho Kosugi (Revenge of the Ninja) as the ruthless leader of the Ozunu Clan; and Rick Yune (Die Another Day) as Raizo’s rival, Takeshi.
