Warner Bros. has picked up ”Billy Smoke”, an upcoming comic from Oni Press.

Matthew Fox

Matthew Fox is in negotiations to star in the comic adaptation.

The story centers on an elite hit-man who is nearly killed during a botched job. He realizes that his only way to find redemption is to rid the world of all assassins.

The comic book series, written by B. Clay Moore and illustrated by Eric Kim, will be published by Oni in 2009.

B. Clay Moore’s books have a knack of getting snapped up by Hollywood, with his comic Leading Man, another Oni title, being developed at Universal and his Hawaiian Dick set up at New Line.

Other Oni comics in development for film adaptations include Ben Stiller’s Return Of King Doug and Scott Pilgrim.

Heath Ledger - The Joker

Warner Bros. has paid tribute to Heath Ledger in the final credits of the new movie “The Dark Knight“, in which the late Aussie actor plays The Joker.

Heath Ledger, who died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in January, reportedly gives a brilliant performance playing opposite Christian Bale’s Batman.

The tribute, which also pays tribute to a special-effects technician who died last September, was uploaded onto the Warner Bros. media website on Thursday (June 26) saying.

“In memory of our friends Heath Ledger & Conway Wickliffe.

Arriving in theaters July 18, “The Dark Knight” reteams Bale with director Christopher Nolan and returning co-stars Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Gary Oldman. Joining the cast are Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Beginning months before Ledger’s death, his frenetic performance and demented-clown makeup have been a cornerstone of the marketing campaign for the film.

In the production notes for “The Dark Knight” Nolan says :

“I needed a phenomenal actor, but he also had to be someone unafraid of taking on such an iconic role. Heath created something entirely original. It’s stunning, it’s captivating. … It’s going to blow people away.”

Posted by Allan Ford 4 June, 2008 (1) Comment

Guy RitchieGuy Ritchie has signed on to write and direct a reimagination of Sherlock Holmes for Warner Bros.
The film will based on Lionel Wigram’s forthcoming comic which reinvents Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic 19th century detective character as a more action-oriented creation. Some of Holmes’ more eccentric abilities such as boxing and swordfighting come into play much more.

Holmes has been portrayed on film and TV more than any other fictional character, with more than 75 actors having played the London detective in 200 films and TV shows since 1900.

Ritchie will rewrite and polish Michael Johnson’s script. Neil Marshall (”The Descent,” “Doomsday“) was previously on board to direct.

‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ Set For Box Office Crown

Posted by Allan Ford 16 May, 2008 (1) Comment
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian

Two weeks after “Iron Man” opened to $99 million at the North American box office, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” will likely earn almost as much this weekend.

Industry observers expect the fantasy sequel will gross $85 million or more during the three-day period beginning Friday. Its 2005 predecessor, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” opened to $65.6 million, and finished with $292 million.

The Disney release has been scoring high in prerelease surveys for must-see sentiment among all demographics and has drawn solid early reviews from critics.

The second book in a 1950s children’s literature series written by the theologically rooted C.S. Lewis, the sequel features a more adult central character via the title role, played by Ben Barnes (”Stardust“). Both films were directed by Andrew Adamson.

Disney distribution president Chuck Viane said:

“This is the quintessential general-audience film — moms and dads, families, date-pic couples, teens by themselves — this plays to everybody”.

Walden Media, a family-friendly production company owned by Denver billionaire Philip Anschutz, is a co-financer and equity partner on the film, which totes production costs of nearly $200 million.

After two weekends at No. 1, “Iron Man” will pass the $200 million mark. As of Wednesday, the Paramount and Marvel superhero saga had earned $188 million.

But the Warner Bros. dud “Speed Racer” will likely crash again, a week after the costly adventure opened at No. 3 with just $18.6 million.

Cannes Film Festival will pay its own tribute to Warner Bros.

Posted by Fiona 8 May, 2008 (0) Comment

The Cannes Film Festival announced plans on Wednesday to pay tribute to Warner Bros. on the studio’s 85th anniversary by screening a classic movie from the studio’s archives.

Looney Tunes

Cannes’ Cinema de la Plage will screen a Warner pic every night, including a one-off “Looney Tunes” event, as part of the Cannes Classic section.

The tribute begins with a screening of Mervyn LeRoy’s 1932 I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang and ends with 1999’s The Matrix.

The festival said that it will also premiere film critic Richard Schickel’s documentary, You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story, narrated by Clint Eastwood, as well as a night of Looney Tunes shorts.

Somewhat surprisingly, the film series does not include a screening of The Jazz Singer, the first sound film, produced in 1927 and starring entertainer Al Jolson.
