Zack Snyder Talks “300″ Sequel

Posted by Allan Ford 26 June, 2009 (0) Comment

Warner Bros. held a press conference recently to demonstrating the new releases of “Watchmen” and “300.”

Zack Snyder | 300

Zack Snyder, director of “300″ revealed that Frank Miller is currently writing and drawing a “300″ sequel (entirely new graphic novel, that he would then adapt once it was finished)

Here’s what he had to say:

“I think we would use the same technology… I don’t want it to look too Star Wars-ian… Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We’re going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I’d hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for 300 was not a revolution. It’s basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it’s Sparta… It’s going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids.”

Based on the Miller Graphic novel, the 2006 film starred Gerard Butler as King Leonidas who, along with a force of 300 men, wages a battle against the Persians at Thermopylae in 480 B.C.

Snyder has said in the past that he will definitely direct “300″ sequel, and that it will take place between the Battle of Thermopylae and the Battle of Plataea, the battle that narrator Dilios is at while re-telling the story of King Leonidas and the Spartans to a new group of warriors at the end of “300″. James Cameron to Direct “Heavy Metal”

Posted by Allan Ford 8 June, 2009 (0) Comment

Heavy Metal

The remake of “Heavy Metal” is attracting some major names. James Cameron will co-executive produce and possibly direct a segment of the upcoming “Heavy Metal” anthology movie.

Producer Kevin Eastman tells Film School Rejects:

“I’ve got breaking news that David Fincher and James Cameron are going to be Co-Executive Producers on the film. Fincher will direct one. Cameron will direct one. Zack Snyder (300, Watchmen) is going to direct one and Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy) is going to. Mark Osborne (Kung Fu Panda) and Jack Black from Tenacious D are going to do a comedy segment for the film. Three other directors have agreed but we haven’t signed them, but they’re equally as jaw-dropping. So we’re on cloud nine to be working with such an amazing amount of talent.”

The movie is a reboot of the original 1981  animated film, from executive producer Leonard Mogel, who was also the publisher of Heavy Metal magazine, the adult fantasy publication.

“Heavy Metal” is now waiting on a studio (Paramount Pictures) to step forward and fund it.

Zack Snyder To Direct Star Wars Reboot? Or April Fools Joke!?

Posted by Fiona 1 April, 2009 (0) Comment

Zack Snyder image

At this year’s ShoWest, Zack Snyder and George Lucas announce to the world that Snyder has been tapped to reboot the “Star Wars” franchise!? April fools joke?

Maybe but here’s the word from MovieWeb.com:

“To be honest, Zack wasn’t always my first choice,” Lucas told a crowd of skeptical journalists and fans. “But I feel he can really 300 up the project.”

“The original trilogy is really lacking in terms of cohesiveness, writing, and overall story structure. I just didn’t have the time then to do what I did with episodes 1, 2 and 3 which represent the true intended Star Wars universe,” Lucas added.

“Quite frankly, and I know a lot of people won’t want to hear this, but I find the episodes 4-6 to be somewhat boring when compared to episodes 1-3. I just have never felt totally satisfied with this franchise and I think the fans know that.”

Snyder has said that he’d like to use the original cast’s voices somewhere in the mix. There is even talk about new 3-D technology!

Emily Browning Stars In Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch

Posted by Fiona 31 March, 2009 (0) Comment

Emily BrowningEmily Browning has replaced Amanda Seyfried in Zack Snyder’s next movie “Sucker Punch.” Seyfried wasn’t able to take on the role due to a scheduling conflict.

Browning, the Australian actress who can next be seen in horror film “The Uninvited,” will take on the lead role of Baby Doll, an insane asylum inmate who loses herself in a fantasy world where she dreams about escaping with her fellow inmates. So, Snyder likes to call the project “Alice In Wonderland with machine guns“.

“Sucker Punch” is set in 1950’s and follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man.

The action-fantasy film is the first project at Snyder’s new production company Cruel and Unusual Films. Snyder will co-write it with Steve Shibuya, from his own short story, and produce with his wife Deborah Snyder.

“Sucker Punch” which also stars Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish, Evan Rachel Wood, and Emma Stone is set to be released October 8, 2010.

Watchmen Review

Posted by Allan Ford 7 March, 2009 (1) Comment

From my perspective, Snyder’s Watchmen achieves two goals. It delivers a visually stimulating companion piece for dedicated fans. And it provides a portal for newcomers taking their first tour through Moore and Gibbons’ thought-provoking but pessimistic universe. Their next step should be toward the bookstore, where the definitive version of Watchmen still waits.

It’s somewhat appropriate for director Zack Snyder to accept the challenge of translating Watchmen to film. Like the proud but overmatched Spartans in Snyder’s breakthrough smash, 300, he’s waging a battle that can’t be won. Whatever version he delivers, it will be compared to Moore’s vision — which means it’s likely to disappoint the graphic novel’s uncompromising fan base. Even Moore refuses to endorse any cinematic renditions of his work, believing film, as a medium, can’t do his comic-book story justice…[WorstPreviews]

If you’ve never read WATCHMEN, I’m recommending you wait until after you’ve seen the film. Everyone I’ve spoken to who saw the film as WATCHMEN virgins loved it. And believe me, that was not at all what I was expecting to hear. For all of you first timers, here is a synopsis. Don’t read the spoilers below. WATCHMEN is set in an alternate 1980’s America. Remember the 80’s? Big hair, bad music (no one send me hate mail for that please) and constant fear of nuclear war with the Soviet Union. Well, in the version of the hairspray decade, the tension is still there. But we have a special weapon. Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup). In 1959, scientist Jon Osterman accidentally enters an “Intrinsic Field Subtractor” that disintegrates his body. He is able to rebuild himself with his mind, one cell at a time, as a giant blue (and often naked and well-hung) superman who has incredible abilities and keeps the Soviets at bay. But he’s becoming more and more alien. Nixon is running for a third term and tensions are growing despite Mr. Blue. The streets are getting violent as people wait for the end. The symbolic Doomsday Clock inches closer to midnight and things start to fall apart. But what about our superheroes?… [JOBLO]

No comic book has been the subject of more essays and serious literary discussion than Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen. It has been named one of the 100 greatest novels of the past century by Time Magazine. Released 20 years ago, the 12-issue maxi-series was a groundbreaking achievement for comics. Written “for adults,” Watchmen opened the doors for thought-provoking and intelligent comics in the mainstream. Two decades after its arrival, there is still no greater comic book.

In honor of the 20-year anniversary, DC Comics released a $75 oversized hardcover, Absolute Watchmen. For the first time, the series can be enjoyed at a considerably larger size and with completely re-mastered color. Few would argue the brilliance of Moore’s book, but get this — the Absolute Edition makes this epic tale even better. That’s right, the story lauded by critics and loved by fans is now more powerful than any version you have previously read…[IGN]
