I just saw “Tokyo!” recently, and I can't wait to go and buy it. (It came out on DVD and Blu-ray for all you fellow fans.) It runs in the vein of “Paris, Je'Taime” but with a focus on the sprawling metropolis that is Tokyo. There are three directors and three separate stories presented in the film, and all three have something unique to offer the audience. From the first, Gondry takes the story of a young couple trying to begin a new life in Tokyo and then transforms it into a surreal metamorphosis of self-discovery for the main female character. In the second, Carax explores the monster phenomena via a sewer-dwelling leprechaun-esque character who wreaks havoc and reaches superstar status for it. In the final, my personal favorite, Bong explores the emerging trend of social seclusion through the life of a man who refuses to leave his house until love arrives in the form of a pizza delivery girl. If you love surreal, creative, and engaging cinema, then “Tokyo!” is the movie for you. Check it out!
