Charles Dicken’s masterly coming of age tale, Great Expectations has been adapted for stage and screen many times over. This time Harry Potter helmer Mike Newell is bringing it to a new generation of spectators.
Written by David Nicholls (One Day) the cast includes Ralph Fiennes who plays the escaped convict Magwitch, Helena Bonham Carter as Miss Havisham, and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) as Pip, the young hero of the story. Co-stars Holliday Grainger (The Borgias), Robbie Coltrane, Sally Hawkins, David Walliams, in this drama about a young orphan whose life is enriched thanks to a mysterious benefactor.
The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and received rave reviews. In other words, ‘it falters under the weight of its expectations.’
However, Great Expectations is slated for release in the U.K. on November 30th and was recently picked up for US distribution.
