34th Saturn Awards’ Noms, ‘300’ Dominates

Allan Ford June 13, 2013
‘300′ Dominates 34th Saturn Awards' Noms As the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films announced the nomination for the 34th Annual Saturn Awards, it was revealed that the Greek epic “300” was leading the pack by garnering 10 nods. The action adventure drama based on Frank Miller's graphic novel received gongs for almost all of the feature film categories, including for the action/adventure/thriller film. In the action/adventure/thriller film's category, “300” will be contending against acclaimed crime dramas, “No Country for Old Men” and “There Will Be Blood” as well as other action films, “3:10 to Yuma”, “The Bourne Ultimatum”, “Live Free or Die Hard” and “Zodiac”. For the directing category, the film's helmer Zack Snyder is going to be up against Tim Burton of “Sweeney Todd”, Frank Darabont of “The Mist”, Paul Greengrass of “Ultimatum”, Sam Raimi of “Spider-Man 3” and David Yates of “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. Apart from the two categories, the Warner Bros. Pictures' film also grabbed nods for special effect, make-up, best costume, music and writing. On the performers' group, “300” landed Gerard Butler, David Wenham and Lena Headey for actor, supporting actor and supporting actress gongs respectively. “300” was not the only movie that successfully gathered multiple nominations for Saturn Awards. The footsteps of Butler's film was closely followed by “Harry Potter V” and “Sweeney” which got 9 and 8 nominations in respective order. Further, “The Golden Compass”, “Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End” and “Spider-Man” also received 4 nominations each. The shocking twist coming from the announcement was that the movie critics' favorite films “No Country” and “Blood” were only given three nomination slots along with “Ultimatum”, “Eastern Promises”, “Enchanted”, “Grindhouse”, “Mist” and “Stardust” Aside from announcing the feature film's nominees, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, which was founded in 1972 by film historian Dr. Donald A. Reed, is also recognizing works in the television. The awards ceremony is scheduled to be held on Tuesday, June 24, in Universal City, California. In the ceremony, renowned director Guillermo del Toro will be honored with the George Pal Memorial Award.
