Whew. Did anyone else just blink too hard? Because now there's a live-action 5 Centimeters per Second trailer in my feed and, look, I was still recovering from the Cowboy Bebop fiasco. Don't ask how that ended. Anyway—what was I saying? Oh. Right. This thing.
Makoto Shinkai's 2007 film — you know, the sad one, the one with the snow and trains and people staring out windows (how many windows does one movie need, honestly?) — is getting real people, real faces, real… feelings? Maybe. Kinda. Directed by Yoshiyuki Okuyama, which, sure, let's trust somebody new for once. Did I mention he said something about putting a “warm hand” on Takaki's back? Sounds like my Auntie after Thanksgiving dinner.

Movie comes out in Japan on October 10th. Mark your… I dunno, calendar. Or don't. They got Hokuto Matsumura playing Takaki, apparently both grown and not-grown show up (Yuto Ueda, Noa Hirayama, good luck keeping track), and technology is cold now? Like, colder than last winter's unwashed blanket in my parents' attic. Sorry, got distracted.
The synopsis is all petals, winter, and cruel technology, but somehow it's supposed to be romantic. Was it ever? Did I miss that memo? Sometimes I think these studios just remake things because they want to see if we notice. No. No. Just… no. (But maybe yes?)
Shinkai says he was “immature” when he made the original. Cool, me too, honestly. And if this isn't any good, can I just say I told you so? Anyway, let's hope the rest isn't as weirdly okay as the teaser. Or maybe I want it to be weird, I dunno. I miss when you had to wait for things. Waiting made it feel bigger.
Maybe I'll go outside for once. Or I'll just rewatch the trailer. Again. In bed. With snacks. Let's see if it hurts.
