Top 10 Movie Trailers Of 2013 (So Far)

Top 10 Movie Trailers

Trailers invariably draw more attention than the feature films that follow and more than one film this year has been a huge failure following the ad that preceded it.

10. This Is the End9. Only God Forgives8. Pain & Gain7. Don Jon6. Before Midnight5. The Wolf of Wall Street4. The Great Gatsby3. Inside Llewyn Davis2. Man of Steel1. Gravity

Check out this list of the top 10 best trailers of 2013, so far.

10. This Is the End

The teaser for this apocalyptic comedy leaves us unsure what the nature of the apocalypse is. One thing is sure, it's a lot of fun.

9. Only God Forgives

The trailer for Only God Forgives is boosted by Kristen Scott Thomas chewing the scenery as a bleach-blond, animal-print draped which with Freudian subtext abounding and images of blood-drenched corpses.

8. Pain & Gain

Michael Bay's $26 million pet project, Pain & Gain is obviously not a work of great delicacy, but the trailer clearly shows a hunk of sun-bleached, hiphop-powered entertainment and that'll do us fine.

7. Don Jon

The trailer for Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut is stylistically the most simple on this list, but at least, to take a novel approach to the differences between men and women.

6. Before Midnight

Nine years on, July Delpy's impulsive Parisian, Celine, and Hawke's the congenially scruffy writer, Jesse, are still as compelling as ever. The trailer captures the little moments that make the character's relationship special without seeming episodic which sells the film perfectly.

5. The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese, one of the world's most respected depicters of machismo in films like Goodfellas and Cape Fear, here's depicting yuppie activities that would make Patrick Bateman blush. The sharp cutting and drum beats quickly establish the furious pace of the world that we are about to enter.

4. The Great Gatsby

Leonardo DiCaprio's magnetic presence in the film continues to spread with this Baz Luhrmann's adaptation. The trailer feels like the whole of The Great Gatsby reduced into two and a half minutes, a heady joyride, a one of a kind experience that convinced us that maybe F. Scott Fitzgerald's contender for the Great American Novel could finally work on the screen.

3. Inside Llewyn Davis

I'm a huge Coen brothers fan, but their ability to evoke an era is one of the Coens' less appreciated talents. However, this seems likely to be a fairly faithful recreation with a long-time collaborator John Goodman who eclectically makes an appearance in a florid suit.

2. Man of Steel

Hans Zimmer's tribal score provides the perfect accompaniment to this ethereal, strangely Mallick-inspired introduction to Henry Cavill's Superman that was something no Superman or arguably superhero film had ever offered us before. Man of Steel has to be our trailer of the year so far, but I'll put all my money on…

1. Gravity

The initial impression we get from the latest film by Alfonso Cuaron, is one of tremendous beauty – Planet Earth laid out beneath us in green and blue and wisps of cloud like an ode to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The trailer does a great job of less focusing on the plot than the immediate situation in which George Clooney and Sandra Bullock find themselves.
